*shrug* if you want to stop at just 2 be my guest, but then I'm not sure why you would want 16:9 for "productivity".

Personally, I only have enough physical space for a single 25-30 inch monitor. Otherwise I'd likely have a 6 (2 up 3 across) panel setup even though I'd still only use 1-3 for gaming. Symmetry is just a beautiful thing... and saves you neck cramps.

Huh? Why are you guys even talking about dual or hexa setups? When did the topic get derailed?

Eh whatever, I'll toss in my 2cents.gif. Whatever the resolution, a dual monitor setup is proven to increase productivity and increase the amount of porn watched. Three is subject to diminishing returns. Six is even worse. Aspect ratio also doesn't matter. Whether it is 4:3 or 16:10 or that new Dell monitor coming out, that second screen is ridiculously helpful in most work environments. Whether your rendering/editing, working with charts and data, what have you, having that second screen helps ensure you'll forget that alt tab command and have less of a reason to scroll sideways.

Obviously more resolution is a great thing. As is larger size (to a point). But if I had to choose between the options the OP listed, I'd take the three 1080's everytime. I might change my mind when monitor resolution is high enough to layout a spreadsheet, browser window, console controls and a half dozen other things on a screen large enough to see them all with good ppi. But that's a long ways away. Even then, with the way windows handles maximizing an open program, a separate monitor may still be the best route.

How about three 27in 2560x1440 IPS screens ?
OP - I just upgraded to a 27" 1440p monitor from a 22" 1080p.

Trust me, get the 1440p. I can't speak for triple monitor surround as I've never tried it myself, only seen it on display and really wanted it in theory, but in the end I didn't want the hassle of compatibility or lack thereof.

One thing to consider is the density of the pixels: lets use my recent upgrade as a comparison.. At 27 inches and 1440p, you have increased the amount of pixels on screen by around 80-85% from 1080p, but only increased the actual screen size about 22-24% (22" to 27").

This means that the total resolution of everything looks comparatively sharper and higher-resolution than 1080p, because it is. You cannot compare this to 5760x1080 however, because all triple monitor does is expand the number of pixels exactly relative to the physical size increase, not increase their quality in the same physical space.

Not the best or most accurate answer, but I hope it helps you to understand.

In the real world this means that older games look better at 1440p, newer games are GORGEOUS. The colours on IPS screens are something that continue to take my breath away coming from a TN panel previously.

This upgrade to a 27" IPS 1440p is in the same real that the jump from a HDD to an SSD was. I've found it immensely satisfying so far.

went from 1080p to 1440p. Never going back.
Its like going from HDD to SSD, or rubber dome keyboard to Mechanical keyboard.

Or like going from 800x600 to 1024x768? It always baffles me that people have such a hard time understanding what a theoretical increase in resolution would be like. Are you all really that new to computers that you havn't already witnessed such a step several times over?
