I'll reserve my hate for these until I hear them. My thing is, an enclosed headphone with a metal housing? That just doesn't sound like a good idea. Try listening to a sub in a metal box, or powerful car audio with no insulation. My old Dodge Neon was like that, sounded like garbage. Shoved a bunch of polyester in the doors. Really cheap, but not much improvement. Car was good, but not worth Dynamat.

Since this thread has descended into Beats hate...
I bought a pair of HD600's (had been wanting since I was a teen) about a year ago. I always dreamed of finally buying them; I went through HD515's to HD595's, Koss PortaPros and multitudes of others (first 'real' phones were HD202's). Just picked up some entry-level Beyerdynamics due to a strange bout of luck allowing local availibility, and I really like them; they kind of have that nice 'dark' signature, like my old PortaPros, but do everything better overall. Not a big fan of the flimsy-feeling plastic housing, but it's better than a lot of stuff I've tried. Now I'm in the desert (military). Half of the morning bus has those stupid Beats. Yes, I've demoed them. No, wasn't impressed.

I put on the 600's. They're more than durable enough to carry around in my bag. It doesn't get thrown around or left out in the sun, so it's okay. Also have my bag next to me at all times.
Before I even start playing a song, I think it was something by Combichrist:
"Woah dude! You got a pair of 12-inch subs on your head!"
They get a lot more attention than any Beats do. I bought them because they sound incredible, but, even though they're not 'cool' or brightly colored, everyone's still like "Whaaaaaaaat the hell are THOSE!?"
Then they hear them and are floored something like that can exist.

If positive attention and social approval is what the average Beats-wearer is looking for, they're not the ones getting it. So now, are they just a norm? Like the Walkman back in the day?

Wrong. Have you heard the Grado PS1000?? Full metal housing. One of the best headphone on the market.

Did you just divide 13 by 15? Because that is not what a confidence interval is. If you have an 87% chance of getting the answer right after 15 trials, that means the odds of this being "dumb luck" are less than 5%. With his 13 out of 15, it means you can conlude there is more than a 95% chance that he wasn't guessing and there actually was a difference. Asuming the test was not flawed otherwise, of course.

The PS1000 is not only metal. It also has wood in there. And it is not fully enclosed, they are open-air headphones. Much less resonance problems with an open headphone.

Enclosed. As in, with these beats, sound bouncing around inside of metal boxes on your head. PS1000's are straight open, so they could make it out of bismouth if they wanted to.
That would be awesome.
