Formating, Allocation unit size?

Thread Starter
Hi, Im formatting my old 80GB Maxtor diamond IDE drive that i have fitted to my computer to use a 40GB partition for back ups and 40GB for rarely used files and programs.
I am clicking the right mouse button on the desired volume and selecting format, but it has a drop down option for allocation unit size.
What is this and what should i set it at? The options are - Default allocation size, 512 bytes, 1024 bytes, 2048 bytes and 4096 bytes.
I am going to use the NTFS file system.

Thanks in advance,
