PCI-e 3.0 vs. 2.0

Hello all,

I'm working on a new build and I've been debating between Intel and AMD. I've had very good experiences with both companies, but what I'm most concerned about is the performance difference between PCI-e 3.0 and 2.0. I've noticed that the 990FX chipset doesn't appear to be compatible with 3.0, thus no motherboards out there with it integrated yet. I just want to see what everyone's experience has been looking at high end GPU's (7950 and 7970 in particular, as I will be using 2) and see if it would be worth it to make the price jump up to an i7-3770k, or stick with the FX-8150. I generally like the OC potential of the AMD processors, as well as the price, so I would like to stay there if possible.

Cheers,

Kilian

Google it you can see benchmarks..

Youre not going to hit the bandwidth limits of PCI-e 2.0x16 with a high end card for a good while.
Wouldnt worry about that, but if youre putting a new build together, makes sense to have the latest etc.

I have an AMD 8120 that runs boinc 24/7 because it would not run 2 670's in surround. I had no complaints about it until then. My main rig now is a 3570k and just from my experience I can tell you that my 3d mark scores went up. In the real world, not a noticeable improvement.

Going with 79xx, you will not have the same problems I had.

I did google it, and look at the benchmarks, I just wanted to hear other people's experience and if anyone saw a noticeable difference in performance.

If you can hold off a bit you can see what the new FX processors bring to the table. I think the 8350 is suppose to retail at $250. Not that far off from the 8150's that go for $189 now.

I believe any ivy bridge chip can do PCIe 3.0, so you won't have to purchase a more expensive processor.
Also, I am not entirely sure, but I thought that intel processors overclocked better than AMD ones, this generation.

PCIe 3.0 is pretty much a useless upgrade over PCIe 2.0, unless you are trying to run a graphics card on only 4x lanes, AFAIK.

The improvement on the amd side is still not going to up to par with a 3770k....ive been an amd guy forever but this time they are too far behind.

I had honestly forgot that AMD was dropping the 8350's so soon, thanks!

Any Ivy bridge can do 3.0, but if I'm going Intel, I'll be going for the 3770k. My big debate on Intel was actually between that and the 3930k.

I'm actually pretty sure that AMD currently holds the overclocking market since the addition of the 8150, but the 3990k is very strong as well.

That makes sense, and thank you. I'll only be running two cards, and they will both be on 16x slots, so that just about clears up my decision.

Cheers!

I'd be interested to see if you have any benchmarks with your results either way.... I recently ran a 2600k, as well as an 8120 and a 6100, and I found there were some things I liked more about both processors. How much of an improvement have you seen with the 3770k?
