Help choosing a monitor

I have an 21.5" Asus VH222H, but I want a new monitor for gaming (PC and connecting Xbox / PS3), video / movies, some Photoshop, and general browsing (its essentially replacing a TV plus being a PC monitor). Here are my criteria and reasons for picking the monitors below:

1. I want to connect the monitor to my PC and PS3 / Xbox 360. I don't know of any way to connect consoles via non-HDMI connections, meaning I need something with HDMI and the PC needs to connect through DVI. If there is another way, tell me please.
2. I don't know what the comparison is from monitor size -> TV size: if a monitor is 23" and I sit 1.5 feet away, that is equivalent of a TV that is x" where I sit 4 feet away. So I picked 23" for a monitor as an estimate of "big". I don't want a huge monitor (27"+), but any 23-24" is fine. Is there a chart to get me that info?
3. I'm looking for a good quality monitor. I have no idea if I want IPS and if its that much better than TN (is a mid range IPS better than a higher-end TN?). As this is replacing a TV (for Xbox / PS3 and movies), I'll spend a lot of time looking at this thing. I'd like a good one.
4. I'll only be gaming or video editing on this new monitor, so no need to worry about sizes, bezels, GPU.
5. On the quality note, I'd rather pay for a better monitor with a dead pixel replacement plan than risk a bad monitor. That is one strike against the Korean IPS lineup (I think).

Here is what I am interested in so far, but suggest more if I'm missing something.

1. Asus PB238Q - $229

2. Asus VH242H - $179

3. Dell S2340L - $249

I didn't pick the Dell Ultrasharp (or a Korean IPS) due to lack of HDMI. That is due to point #1 above. If #1 isn't valid, I'll add non-HDMI monitors to this mix. I'm not looking to spend $400+ on a 23" monitor, but quality > cost for me.

Thanks for your help!

Anyone? Is there any more info you need? If my question is too long, I can paraphrase:

1. mid- to high-end TN vs low- to mid-range IPS?
2. Is using a PC monitor as a console gaming display realistic for a PC, XBox, and PS3 or are PC monitors + consoles meant for specific occasions - like competitive gaming and not long term use?

Noting the above, I'd like a good quality monitor, but don't want to spend $400+ for 23" -- I'd have to spend that much for more. I'm used to 21.5", so I'm not sure how big 23" feels when sitting 1.5 feet away when I'm used to sitting 5" away from a TV. Are any of the monitors listed below big enough and good enough quality for long term use?
