First timer needs a helping hand! - Page 6

if the motherboard's bios was never updated to run bulldozer it might need an update. once you get the thermal paste in your hands swap in the sempron procesor and see if it boots with that....if so then it probably needs a bios update to run the bulldozer chip.

With that board and any good video card, you're going to need at least 450-500 watts.

new cpu is amd fx 6100 old is a sempron. Power unit is rated at 750 and seems to be powering everything else except cpu and fan ok

Make a nice flat INSULATED surface, like a piece of thick cardboard. Inspected the back of the mobo and make sure there is nothing is, or has been, shorting out. With only 1 stick of RAM and the video card, put power on the system and see what happens.

I have done this with no change in end result........Doh! Is DIY computing always this much fun? lol

If this is your first time putting on thermal paste, you might want to you tube a walk through. The first time I did it I was a little over zealous and put to much and it made it run hot.

Hello, maybe I can help out. With the BIOS battery, the side with the circle around the edge should be facing down.

This motherboard is fairly new and that being said it'd be very rare to have to update the BIOS for your processor.

Can you spin the cpu fan manually at all.

Also, don't worry too much about leaving it run a bit with a dead fan, most cpu's can idle a bit with no fan.

Yes the fan will turn freely when manually pushed. Would it be safe to run for 5 minutes without CPU damage?

It'd probably be fine but to be sure just go for 2. And when you are leaving it on with no fan are you able to monitor temps? If so then you can just keep an eye on temps and run it as long as temps are good.
