Asus Matrix HD7970 Platinum Review and Post-Your-Overclocks Thread!

Hey guys,

on 16 OCT 2012 the Asus Matrix HD7970 Platinum Republic of Gamers beast of a GPU hit retail world wide.

I now have the privilege to show you what it's got. (And if you have one too please share results!)

First up i have an unboxing video here:

Some pics of the card:

MtE4y.jpg

This 3 slot monster is designed to stay cool while you overclock or game, so i took a look at what temps you would get.

Ambient temperature:
21.4C
Bhi1V.jpg

I left the card at pure stock.

Idle temps were 27c and at the highest load during 3DMark11 it was at 58c.

IjV5v.png

Then i took off the sinks to see what was hiding underneath
NxC5G.jpg

20 phases of awesome. The most there has ever been on a single core graphics card.
NNxgy.jpg

The back:
it4wP.jpg

I re-applied GC-Extreme thermal paste to see what the new idle and load temps will be like:

Idle temps were 27c and at the highest load during 3DMark11 it was at 57c
FPChO.png

as you can see IDLE is the same and LOAD is only 1 degree cooler. So the stock paste used on this graphics card is very high end stuff.

Next up i wanted to see what Overclocked temps look like with the fan at 100%.

at 1.35v and 1250mhz CORE i got 29c IDLE and 54C load. Thats less than leaving it stock! Shows you how this cooler is doing it's thing.

This card is designed for Overclockers and Gamers, i am an overclocker so im going to see what this card does at maximum overclock on air (for now wink.gif)

First a pure stock run With a 3770k cpu at 4ghz.

Not a very impressive run for benchmarking is it? Thats because tesselation is still on.
CUD95.png

Turning off tesselation gives a huge boost in 3DMark11 when you are going for highest score:
GKp36.png

i rerun pure stock with tesselation OFF:

Thats almost a 1500 point boost.. Very much needed for benchmarking!
H9oL4.png

Next i just clicked the gaming profile in Asus GPU-Tweak to see what score i will get:

THuO7.png

Nice! 150 more points.

N1MW7.png

Now i went for some manual overclocking and set it to 1245mhz Core and 1800mhz memory.
Got me 900 more points!
SyrkD.png

Finally i gained 300 more points by maxing out at 1280mhz core 1900mhz memory. (1.37v GPU was used)

f27gm.png

Thats it for air testing, next up would be LN2 and thats where the real pleasure comes in with this card!

Please view the features video, this graphics card has many light indications and gadgets that might catch your fancy smile.gif.

Last but not least Asus GPU tweak,

a VERY VERY functional piece of software i recommend for you, it has more features than any other and is really easy to use. Check it out

If you get one come post in this thread and we can troubleshoot and compare scores

Great review. You know your stuff smile.gif If there's any way I could get a copy of that specific version of gpu tweak: 2.2.1.2 i'd be very grateful as it doesn't seem to be available on asus' website! smile.gif

With the never settle deal being announced I m thinking this is the card for me; now if I could only find one for sale.
I got my card today =)

I didn't get as high of a OC as you do. I think mine has to do with temperatures in my case as all your benchmarks/overclock was done in open air.

Right now the best stable overclock i got inside my case is:

1210/1750 with Furmark Burn Test its stable at 82C. I tried to push the gpu core clock more but it will start to screen tear, and help on how to get rid of screen tear?

My case is Fractal Design R4 with 140mm intake, and 120+140mm exhaust.

Overall I am pleased with this card, as its a GHz edition, so i am getting a 21% OC on my card which is pretty cool biggrin.gif

do not test with furmark or msi kombustor as they are useless and just designed to run the chip at max tdp and push the limits of the cooler.. test with normal apps like BF3, Crysis 2, Heaven 3.0, 3D Mark 11. your temps will be better and you can also aim for 1.275 Ghz - 1.3 Ghz with voltage tweaking.

thanks...

but weird thing was... it just crashed with borderlands 2 ... i had to push it down to 1210/1700

also what voltage tweaking are you talking about? the core voltage?
