another - "which" M/B thread - Z77/75 itx and two questions

Question 1:
Why don't any current Z77 itx's support 32gb DDR3? (16x2) - the chips are out there and the chipset should handle it. I do photoshop so RAM matters. Any chance a future firmware will allow more for any of the current boards - especially since the EVGA thinks it'll take 32GB.

Question 2:
Can you pull the wireless mPCIe card and replace with a mPCIe SATA controller for more drives?

Looking at going even smaller from my Z68 matx to a Z77itx. Most likely a prodigy, but still thinking on that one.
I've seen two such threads already, and the ASrock is certainly a contender. However, I know that we have one new board which has some.

All have 4 sata which I'll use and
Asus ITX - pretty bios rolleyes.gif and 2xesata & higher DDR3 clock (no msata), high price:mad:
ASrock itx - 1x esata, mSATA, higher DDR3 clock, CIR header, medium price
Gigabyte itx - no esata, no msata, WIDI (curious about) dual NIC w/ teaming, BT, low price

EVGA - who knows . . . (no msata, 2xesata, BT, can use 32GB DDR3)

I'm leaning towards the ASrock, but the Gigabyte has me wondering. Never had a WiDi machine before and sounds like fun (wireless display) but then that's an extra cost. Don't like that it lacks an eSATA, but maybe that's not a deal breaker. I don't have an mSATA board, but like the possibility.

Thanks for help & ideas!

The gigabyte ITX board you cannot pull out the Wifi card and replace it with a mSATA as it will be blocking the caps.

It is really close, however I've seen some extension cables
(such as the second one on this page http://www.hwtools.net/Adapter/PE4L%20V2.1.html) an expensive option, though.

There are also, ultra small versions such as http://www.hwtools.net/adapter/PMMD-C.html

Not sure if either are worth it though. But don't really need wifi as my desktop has CAT6 going to it. However, on the gigabyte board, I wonder if taking out the wifi card drops the WiDi and BT too . . . . .

1.
Chipset doesn't determine memory. The only reason that other boards can do 32GB is because of 4 dimms vs 2 dimms on mITX.
From the Intel i7 data sheets.

2.
Slots will be designated mPCIe or mSATA. Sometimes both. Each type is not compatible with the other. So if you want to use an mPCIe to Sata adapter (you linked a single but there are doubles), make sure it goes into an mPCIe slot.

1. However, there is an upcoming itx board - the EVGA z77 that can do 32gb (16x2) in two slots.
(http://www.techpowerup.com/171273/EVGA-s-Thunderbolt-Equipped-Z77-Mini-ITX-Detailed.html) This of course might be a demo model or an mistake.

2. So, you think it would work then?

1. TPU is mistaken. It is correct on the EVGA site: Link

2. It should work just fine. Remember that you are splitting 3Gb/s among two drives so there might be a performance hit possibly.

Oh. You will lose BT and WiDi if you remove the mPCI-E wifi card.

Thanks for the link & the clear-up. Guess we can't have it all, eh?
And thanks for the reminder on the performance hit - it's for storage of photos, so not overly critical. I also thought of a possible solution, albeit ugly, is to pick up an esata to sata cable and thread it from the back in to an internal drive. Ugly, but should work.

Everyone pretty much still on the ASrock at this point, then?

I like the Gigabyte board just because I have a specific use for the triple NICs.

If you really need all this space, I'd say to make a NAS instead to manage it all. That way you can free up room and options for the main rig.

I also love the Gigabyte board but that's cause I have it.

Plus its super cheap and has built in wifi which I need.

Pick a board for your specific needs and not because someone told you to

Agreed. But it is nice to heard feedback sometimes. Currently I use 5 sata devices, but could drop one if needed. That's my only rub on the Gigabyte. I've had a bunch of Gigabyte boards and they've always done well by me. I guess the lack of the eSATA (or mSATA) is my only concern as I have 5 internal drive and an external drive bay. But it does have USB (external drive) so it might not be as big of a concern. Any of you who use the Gigabyte board - have you used the WiDi at all? Love to hear from first hand feedback.

Looks like all of the boards (save ASUS) are out of stock on Amazon (prime) . . . sheesh.
