Ultra noob question

Thread Starter
Hey guys, im about to build my first home server for media streaming, virtualization, backups and minecraft. I've never done this before, but i have one burning question? Whats the benefit of installing a separate $300 RAID controller when most mobo's have it built in? Whats the advantages?

$300 Raid controler will have more throughput than an onboard chip,
you will also get more Sata ports to upgrade to MASSIVE storage

Try a RAID 5 on built-in RAID. That's one major reason why hardware RAID cards exist.

It would be very, very slow unless if the motherboard you are using comes with a dedicated raid controller built in on-board.

Don't do a RAID 5 unless you can cope with very slow write speeds. I would be impressed if they were over 10 MBps.

To rephrase: Do NOT do a RAID 5 unless you don't mind having the I/O performance of a 486.

if you want good RAID 5 performance, get something like a PERC 5i or i6 of ebay which a nice cards and cheap too.. or get a new RAID card such as LSI or Adaptec card for example

Yes, you will get better performance out of a dedicated card, BUT, here is what the onboard intel raid 5 is capable of with 4 green drives in raid 5....

intelraid5128khdtunewri.png

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

That's the write speed I get from the server in my sig.... The read is even better. I hardly think that would be a problem for any home network.
