I have a brand new FC8 which works perfectly when set to max speed. As soon as I start to dial things back it makes this sort of squeal/ticking noise. It doesn't matter if I have 1 or 4 fans per channel, it consistently makes the same noise. Right now in my testing I have 4 AP15's on 2 channels (8 fans total).

Is this something that will itself over time or is it indicative of failing capacitors? Is it just a load issue? If so then that doesn't make me feel so great considering it's going to be controlling 32 fans in the next week or 2. Should I just RMA it? Has anyone had to deal with Lamptron for an issue similar to this? I'm a little worried because all their operations are in China.

Not capacitors, inductors. Capacitors don't vibrate. It's coil whine caused by inductors. No, it probably won't go away. It's more likely to get worst over time.

Inductors are basically coils of wire. Usually, with inductors a high frequency pulse is put through the inductor coil. This creates a magnetic field, which sometimes causes the coil to vibrate producing a high-pitched noise. This is known as "coil whine". -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coil_noise You stop it, by keeping the inductor from vibrating.

Most companies will NOT allow you to RMA a product just because of coil whine. (You can always try.).

If you google "how to remove coil whine" you get a billion pages of results. Different people will tell you do different things. Some say to coat the inductor in hot glue, others say to paint it with nail polish or super glue.

You can coat a inductor with pretty much whatever you want, as long as it doesn't conduct electricity and the inductor will continue to function the same.

Some inductors are sealed behind a plastic case, in that case stopping coil whine is really hard.

Thanks for the great explanation. This confirms what Lamptron support has replied back with as the cause; "inductance".

This is the exact quote I received from Lamptron:

The problem is that it's going to cost me between $50 and $60 to ship it back to them bringing my total out of pocket cost for this controller to roughly $120. They said they would send a replacement which will take anywhere from 2-6 weeks to receive. My goal is to have my new build completely put together and leak test on Saturday and hopefully begin to do some benching/overclocking on Sunday. Without a controller this isn't going to happen.

Just curious.... are you going to sent it back, deal with it "as is", or attempt to stop the coil whine on your own?

Ironically, i work at a electronics company, and i am the one who fixes and returns the RMA's. If a customer complained about coil whine, i would just swap out the inductors with new ones which takes about 15 minutes. 2-6 weeks is pretty ridiculous, but they could be really understaffed.

After speaking with Jeff at FrozenCPU and explaining my situation and what Lamptron had told/wanted me to do, he's allowing me to do an advanced RMA through them, even though I purchased this from them over a month ago. I purchased a new one yesterday and will be shipping my old one back to them. Once they receive it I will be getting a refund. Lamptron wants me to send it to China to have it RMA'd through them. That would have cost me an additional $50-$60 that I wouldn't be able to recoup and would take anywhere from 2-6 weeks to get the replacement. This way I still get to put my system together this weekend.

I honestly wouldn't trust my self to replace them myself, even though I'm sure I could find simple enough instructions online. I'm sure I would mess something up and would either find a way to shock myself silly or melt my system down.

I forgot to add that Jeff at FrozenCPU would make sure that someone tests the new unit for bad channels and noise before I left their warehouse to ensure that this whole process doesn't happen again.

Just a quick update... My new controller arrived yesterday. Tested it out last night and it's dead silent. I'm very pleased and it looks like I might be able to complete my build this weekend. Now to compile all my pictures and write up my build log draft. I'll probably do all that while leak testing.
