Bob from California - Alienware M14 R2 - 256GB mSATA SSD (CRUCIAL M4) Installed... - Page 2

I've had an M15x for about two years now. It's been absolutely Hell on earth to get any sort of stability out of it. I can't game at all. whatsoever. If I play any game, from something as light as Civilization III all the way to Battlefield Bad Company 2, the computer will crash (Solid red screen) about ten minutes after starting playing. The card is not overheating. i've taken it out, cleaned it, and reapplied TIM. I've reinstalled every driver there is, all the way back to the early Nvidia 200 days. I've tried Windows Vista, 7, and 8. I'm convinced there's a fault in the power delivery or a hardware fault on the GPU itself. (GeForce GTX 260m)

Dell/Alienware has refused to be helpful at all. I have called them multiple times, and since the problem can't be reproduced when the rep is remote-logged in, they refuse to help me. i could write a whole rant thread about it if I chose to.

I like the look of the computer. The hardware was strong when it was released. But it's been sheer hell to get it to work for more than a short time and no support to be had.

Sager and Mythlogic assemble the P150em. The other are resellers that you place an order to they send the order to Sager then Sager ships it to you.

I was unaware that the Mac Book Pro Retina only had a 650m GPU.

I thought a $2000 plus laptop would have the best of everything installed.

So, its just a expensive laptop with a nice high definition screen.

BTW, thanks for recommending the HWiNFO64 utility.

Below is a download link for any other person that may want to use it.

This link is for the 64 bit version. There is also a 32 bit verson available.

http://majorgeeks.com/HWiNFO64_d7005.html

I will download and install it when I receive my laptop from the Dell repair center.

There is a similar utility in windows 7 Home Premium when you press down the F10 or F12 key at bootup there is a diagnostic utility that shows all the hardware temperatures, Fan Speed (in RPM's) similar to the above utility. The HWiNFO64 utility appears to be more detailed then the Microsoft Win 7 version.

Windows 8 will be available from Dell Computer (as an upgrade option) in 10 days on October 29 - I'm considering updating. rolleyes.gif

It's a faster and more stable platform compared to previous versions.

Here is the direct phone number to the Alienware Repairs Department

1-866-287-6727

1) Your power supply maybe bad - (Not supplying a enough current)

2) Sounds like the GPU is damaged. (the original heatsink was not affixed correctly?)

3) you can video-recorded your laptop untill it occurs again. And place the edited version onto YouTube and you will get many answers as to what is happening.

4) Replace the GPU, Install a higher RPM fan, and use a better heatsink. Don't apply to much heatsink compound. And run this utility ( This link is for the 64 bit version. There is also a 32 bit verson available.
http://majorgeeks.com/HWiNFO64_d7005.html) - this utility allows you to monitor the temperature of the GPU as discussed in the above threads.

5) A loose wire in the hindge that connects to the Display.

6) A good way repair tech's identify a faulty CPU or GPU is to use a can of electronic component freeze spray. They spray this cold Freon onto the CPU or GPU while it is running to see if it briefly comes to life thus identifying the faulty component.

No.

Mine is being repaired.

They said I'd have it by Tuesday of next week.

Is a brand new laptop (Alienware M14 R2)

They replaced the motherboard.

Bob,

You know, I had a similar problem with a Dell Precision on friday. We just got it in from dell and I was configuring it for an employee. I booted it up, started running windows updates... went to grab some lunch and came back and the screen was black, I thought it had gone to sleep, but it wouldnt turn on.

When I tried to turn it on the fans would Rev up, the HDD, and Wifi lights would turn on solid and the battery/charge light would blink. Ended up calling dell, and they instructed me to remove all memory and attempt to boot, by doing this I discovered I received a bad stick of ram... somehow...

Any combination of the 3 good sticks in any of the 4 ram slots worked fine, as soon as i put in that bad stick with the other 4 or alone, it failed to boot. Very well could be a similar situation... Just a thought. Next time they ask you to send it in to the Depot, refuse, you should have had a 1 year warranty with in home service...

Alienware has different service reps, so i think the warranty is different as well because of different issues with the machine.

Its odd Dell has 24/7 support but alienware has 9-5 support.

I did also think his issue is related to ram.

Right, but the basic 1 year warranty that comes with alienware has 1 year in home after remote diagnosis, I did not mean to say that dell business and alienware were the same, but i know that their basic warranty has 1 year in home.

The depot is notoriously bad too... Hopefully it will come back working properly for you.
