Ordered a 670.. couple questions..

Just picked up the Gigabyte 670 2GB off of the Amazon deal. How well does the GPU Boost work? I'm playing at 1080p so this card probably won't need to be OC'd a whole lot. If the GPU Boost works well I'll stick with it. The other question is my Gigabyte Z68X-UD4-B3 has PCI Express 2.0, will I notice much difference since this is a 3.0 card?

You should be fine as long as its a x16 PCIe 2.0. This is the same speed as x8 in PCIe 3.0

I read that the boost varies among cards, depending on the temps and other factors but in general its more than enough for 1080p. However, if temps are good, I would definitely suggest overclocking this beast.

What games are you playing right now?

BF3 can dip to mid 40's sometimes but it will go back up. Right now im playing with adaptive VSYNC, so i dont know how high it goes, something as 70's on average with dips to the 40's during intense firefight.

Yea it's PCIe 2.0 x16.

I've read temps are great on this card due to the aftermarket 3 fan cooler. I have a HAF 932 Advance so I'm counting on "decent" temps.

Right now I'm mainly just playing Borderlands 2. I do however need to give the Skyrim DLC a go.

Edit: My 6950 1GB couldn't handle the HD texture pack for Skyrim, I'm assuming this card should?

This is the card I bought.. It's $339 on Amazon right now. Gigabyte 670 2GB

Gpu depends on the chip lottery
You will notice zero difference with PCI Express 2.0

Yes, the max boost or "OC" will depend on the capabilities of the chip on your board.

As someone said before its all about the chip lottery. Some will do 1250 boost core, some will do 1300.

So it's not a set number as stated on the page?

Mine is advertised 980 core / 1058 boost.. I'm assuming the 1058 is a minimum then?

1058MHz is pretty much just what GPU-Z is going to say ... it has little or no actual bearing on the clock your card will actually run at when put under load. I suppose you could call it a 'minimum', although Kepler has like 20 different clock states it seems like, many of them lower than 1058MHz ... but generally you'll only see those if GPU usage drops under 50%.

The majority of the time, assuming you put your card under a full load, keep the temps under 70C, and adjust the power target slider upward if necessary (I've never found it necessary on mine though TBH), you're going see somewhere between 26MHz and 234MHz more than 1058MHz, depending on what your particular card's 'Kepler Boost' value is.

I recommend reading the first link in my signature for an explanation of what to expect thumb.gif
