[TR] O2 kicks out Ericsson server for breaking its network

Last week's outage wasn't as serious as the 21-hour downtime which hit O2 customers in July, but it was down to the same bit of kit – which is why O2 is replacing it with "a proven alternative solution" and has earmarked £10m to pay for the switch on top of the £1.5m that it spends daily on expanding the network.

"We are not prepared to risk this happening to our customers for a third time," says the canned statement from COO Derek McManus, who also talks about "re-focusing our Service Experience Team to be solely dedicated to ensuring the highest level of customer network experience". He adds: "Their performance will now be measured on customers’ confidence in our network."

Whoops! I will be very surprised if E/// doesnt step in and finance the server replacement.. they have made moves like this before on massive scales to keep business..  They dont want their Chinese competitor to wiggle into the middle of their IT dealings. I mean 10mil PS.. psshh drop in the bucket for them. In the mid 90's E/// paid over 130mil USD to rip-out and replace ALL of ATT's existing Nortel network [ on the east coast US ].. just to install E/// equipment.. ATT didnt have to pay a dime.

*Egg on E/// IT for sure.. but im certain they will overcome. Ericsson is a global leader for a reason.. they dont take kindly to mishaps like this that make it public.

I wouldn't worry too much about Chinese competitors smile.gif

I would.. Huawei has already taken a good 40% of overseas telecom business from E/// and is the ONLY competitor in the manufacturing game that can compete with E/// for IT/Telecom products.

**Huawei is backed largely by the Chinese military...  whom I would think its safe to say.. has a larger net-worth than Ericsson global. rolleyes.gif

Really? Cuz that isnt stopping companies like Cricket Wireless, Metro PSC and ATT/VZW/Tmo from purchasing their equipment and installing it to provide Cellular service..  I am a consultant for E/// Telecom in California.. Huawei is E/// single largest threat/competitor where it comes to equipment supply/pricing and availability. Huawei equipment is being installed globally for a multitude of telecom and cell providers to this day...regardless of any "ban"..

Ah then you probably know more than me. Maybe they banned them just from state funded projects.

Having a military backing will sort-of "remove" you from certain customer/job opportunities... kinda like the opposite of a good Union biggrin.gif

Especially since they have been accused of inserting a back door into all of their network gear that only the Chinese have access to.

Several of my customers are already replacing their Huawei gear as a result.
