Custom WDS - Possible?

Hi guys,

I've been doing some home repairs for a long time now. Looking at friends machines, laptop blah blah. Anyway, I've got a whole bunch of disks now that I use for diagnostics and things and was wondering how would I get them on my PXE Boot.

Instead of constantly swapping disks or whatever, just network boot!

Currently at the moment I have Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise - pretty much the full works as roles go. I've got some windows os' on PXE Boot. Does anyone know if its possible to get some legacy images on the Windows deployment service? I am fully aware of the linux/unix options out there, but to be honest, I tend to stay away from linux unless I have to (apologise to all linux nuts for that).

If anyone would have any suggestions or guides, that would be great

I know for a fact that WDS will do Windows Pro SP1 and newer...probably Windows 2000 as well. WDS is great, but very basic as the role goes. You have to manually create and capture your image. Check out the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit, which is a completely free product that USES WDS. It will make things much easier.

I use Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager at home, since it's what I deal with for a living, and I use that for my imaging. It's not free though, and does a lot more than you would ever need/want at home.

Here is a great post about MDT 2012:
http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/5367-microsoft-deployment-toolkit-mdt-2012/

If you google for MDT 2012 guides, they are out there.

I can definitely attest that WDS (the WDS role, anyway) is frustrating to use. Since you have Server 2008 Enterprise, I assume you have access to the SCCM suite. SCCM is really cool and can do all kinds of stuff, but it's not worth the effort for something like this.

WDS is crap for this. You won't be able to boot diagnostic tools. I have two PXE environments - one is WDS for Windows installs and another (yes I know you wanted to stay away) is a Ubuntu VM on a separate subnet running tftp-hpa for booting my diagnostic utilities, etc.

Yeah I kinda thought that it would be that sort of scenario, which is fine as that's what I'll have to do I think. I don't really want to alter my WDS as its working very nicely. So how did you set up your PXE boot may I ask? Anything you can tell me in the way of guides and tips?

Yeah. You can run WDS in mixed-mode or some crap, but too much hassle.
Anyway. To set mine up, I run a Ubuntu server VM inside a Hyper-V box. It's on a separate subnet with its own DHCP server (also running on the Ubuntu VM), so as to not interfere with my existing WDS set up. The tftp server is tftp-hpa.

I can't find the guide I used to set it up now.... crap. But there's a lot if you give it a quick Google. Or maybe I'll end up finding the guide.

Ok sounds reasonable so far. How did you set up your subnet? Have you got managed switches?

Nope. Don't need managed switches for a separate subnet, just use any old separate switch and give nodes a different addressing scheme (I used 172.16.0.0/24 as opposed to 192.168.168.0/24 which is the main subnet). Then set up the DHCP server to hand out addresses for that network.

This way I can properly and securely route traffic no problem on a different subnet. Plus, I'm also interested in the VLAN and load balancing features of this baby:
