[Digitimes] Entry-level $99 Nexus 7 to feature single-core 800 MHz processor - Page 3

Sounds interesting. I have been shopping for the sub $100 cheapo tablets and they all seem to be lacking. Always one thing or another they suck at (battery, bad port connections, cheapo AC adapters, lack of Google Play support, etc etc etc).

I got the wife a Kindle Fire for Xmas last year and we sent it back. Kind of cool but really limited by the locked down Amazon market. It's probably improved a lot in a year but still.

Oh wait the Nexus still doesn't have microsd or hdmi out right?

I mean just as a book reader, watch the occasional show or movie.... anything over $100 just seems like too much.

The Vizio tablets are down to $140ish now, and they have microsd and hdmi out, but there is some kind of design flaw most reviews are *****ing about, the power port goes bad. And it's locked on Gingerbread I think, no HC or ICS options or hacks available. Lame.

Most people prefer brand new devices that actually work and have support, no offense to TouchPad owners.
That is no reason not to use it as a pricing benchmark. It shows the actual cost of the hardware, exposing the relatively ridiculous amount of profit on some of these products.

It's not just branding you're after
That really doesn't justify selling me 1/4 of the machine for the same price.

I'm not saying you can't compare them but your point is kind of moot when one can't buy a TouchPad for that price anymore and that HP took a huge loss on each one during the short Fire Sale. It's not feasible even today for a company to sell a similar speced tablet at that price. Let's not forget when released the HP TouchPad cost $499 for the 16GB and $599 for the 32GB: link. Then later those prices got slashed by $100 and finally dropped off a cliff for the Fire Sale at $99 and $149: link. A little over a year ago it was estimated that the bill of materials for the TouchPad 16GB was $296.15: link. So explain to me how making a $200 loss exposes "the relatively ridiculous amount of profit on some of these products."

The bill of materials for these kinds of devices is often grossly inflated. HP made an entire second run of Touchpads after the first 99 dollar fire sale. I highly doubt they did that only to sell each and every one of them for a loss, either at 199 (asking price at the time) or 99 dollars (the price during the second fire sale).
The math simply doesn't add up. You don't produce thousands of tablets at an intentional 100 dollar loss. The cost had to be much cheaper than $296.15, including labor.

You could be partly right, it is hard to estimate bulk pricing or private deals companies make with their suppliers, but I don't see you give any source to backup your claim. With the highend hardware, at the time, that the TouchPad had there's almost no question they sold them at a loss. The question of how much of a loss is what we don't know for sure. Sorry for getting a bit off topic guys.

Not sure I see the point here. I dearly love my 7" tablets and have gone through 5 different ones over the last year and a half:

Kobo Vox
Blackberry Playbook
Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 + (still have this one my daughter is using it)
Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0
Toshiba AT270 (technically a 7.67").

The cheapest was $200, the most expensive, $420.

Currently you can grab a Blackberry playbook 32GB for $150 and they will likely get even cheaper around xmas. Yes it's not a great tablet but 32GB, dual core cpu, HDMI out, GPS, Bluetooth etc. If it drops to $120- $130 (Which it will according to a mate of mine at Rim), hard pressed to look at a $99 single core tablet with likely the same screen resolution, a quarter of the memory and no HDMI out.

If anyone wants a sub $100 e-reader, Kobo, Kindle and Nook all have cheap e-ink devices.

Hard to say. My GNex does not decode 720p fully.
Anyways this is a good thing considering 90% of the use for this does not need Speed.

I'd rather buy a less-capable tablet that runs JB, and has access tot the Google Play Store, than one with higher specs that runs Blackberry software.
