Post-Deployment Build

Thread Starter
Hey everyone, just wanted to see if I could get some advice on a computer I would like to build after my deployment. I already have a few of the components like hard drives, gpu, psu, operating system, and optical drives so im not worried about that.

You say you have a GPU, but when one looks in sig, you indicate "to be determined". For GPU I recommend the 7950 or the 7970 depending on your butget with the 3GB of VRAM (Gigabyte has a real good one and it's aggressively priced). For the rest refer to my new build log in sig for ideas.

What are you using the computer for and what are you expecting out of it?

If heavy gaming I would say the intel CPUs have an advantage, cost a little more than the AMD ones, but the difference shows in performance, most the time smile.gif The 2500k is at a pretty good spot if you are looking at performance per dollar, as it can be found for $150 if you can get to a Microcenter

Arguably the best ram is this samsung ram, it overclocks like a champ. If you want ram that has big or "cool" heatsinks this isn't for you. However if you have an air cooler on your cpu this stuff is pretty low profile so that is a bonus too.

Not even going to touch cases, there are too many good ones and looks are too subjective, find some of the case clubs here on OCN and see what some people have done with them. Phantom club Switch 810 club Storm Trooper club Prodigy Club Azza club Graphite Series club Fractal club you get the gist.

If you haven't deployed yet, i think it is a good thing to get a general idea of what your looking for, how you want to do it (Air or liquid, etc) but you'll be gone for 6+ months depending on your service / unit. in 6+ months things in the tech world, especially in the enthusiast sector of computers, things change fairly rapidly, the best MB on market now, could be 5th best or less, in that time, and may or may not meet your expectations.

Things I would start thinking of before parts are, what do you want to do? game, benchmarking, video editing, etc. you'll have a nice chunk of cash saved up after you get back, dont let it burn a hole in your pocket before you even get it.

you'll have plenty of time and resources to decide on the parts, but the design process is the fun part imo. for example if you choose air, what case will you want to use, and how where will the airflow go? imo liquid is more detail orientated, so if you decide that route, what type of fittings? single / dual loop or more? internal / external rads, most importantly how do you want to setup your loop?

these are the questions i would be asking myself before parts, once you decide this finding the right parts will be much easier.

thank you for your service, and good luck!
