[BGR] Microsoft Surface preorders for base model sell out in under 24 hours

Though the odds are against it and pricing seems questionable to some, launch-day preorders for the base model of Microsoft’s (MSFT) debut tablet are already sold out. As of Wednesday morning, less than 24 hours after pre-sales went live at noon on Wednesday, shipping times for the stand-alone 32GB Microsoft Surface tablet slipped to “within 3 weeks.” Microsoft did state on Tuesday that preorder inventory would be limited, though it did not clarify how many tablets it would have on hand for pre-sales. As of the time of this writing, launch-day inventory of the 32GB Surface with a black Touch Cover ($599) and the 64GB Surface with a black Touch Cover ($699) was still available. BGR on Tuesday published an in-depth look at the three-year process that lead to the Surface tablet, and said it was a device that marks the start of a major strategic transition at Microsoft. The Surface launches at midnight on October 26th starting at $499.

To be honest that's crazy...I didn't expect that.

They probably only allowed for something like 100 preorders. Just so that they could say that they "sold out".

Yes that's what I thought as well but it's just a speculation and I have only seen reactions to this product about it's price from the tech world not the mainstream world.

In other words it could possibly be what you say but it can also be that the mainstream world liked it a lot for it's price and it will actually sell pretty well.

The mainstream world may possibly not even know that Windows 8 on ARM is not Windows 8 on x86.

Exactly. But to their minds it's just a tablet, they don't care about external proper applications they just want everything handed on to them (through the app store) and being fed with easy choices (click touch, pay, install).

I just happened to see that people didn't justify it's price because of it's specs, not being on x86 and being similarly priced with the other tablets. That's what the tech world sees. The mainstream world though sees exactly this: New shiny cool looking tablet > Looks unique > Apps > Similar price with others > Must buy now.

That's what I believe anyway.
