Having a hard time burning a .dmg for my PowerPC G4

Thread Starter
I only have one mac computer at my household and I have to resort to burning the .dmg in Windows because the OS is defunct... I have used TransMac to expand and burn the image to a DVD+R DL.. But about 96% of the way through... TransMac complains that 'the disk is not blank, delete rewritable media first'... This is stupid because it is a DVD fresh out of the package... So the burned data to the disk, and complained about there being data there already.. And of course my Mac just spits it out when I try to boot from it... Does anyone recommend a program that I can use to do this correctly for a Mac (not a Boot Camp install disk)?

Please help, I am down to my last DL and they are so expensive...

(Oh by the way, I am trying to install OS X 10.5 Retail)

Edit: This is the G4 with the Dual 1.25GHz CPUs and 2GB DDR

TransMac will restore a .DMG to a USB drive - that would be the method I would go - then plug in the USB and when first turning on the mac, hold the Option key and select the USB drive and continue to boot from it, thus not wasting another DL DVD

and of course make sure its the PPC version of 10.5 as I believe there were different dvd's for PPC and Intel

A 10 year old G4 boots from USB? And unfortunately.. I do not have an apple keyboard so I do not know if my keyboards will be supported before it boots... I suppose i can try.. flash drives are so much cheaper than DVDs nowadays

(Edit: My Compaq USB board seems to open the boot menu... All I get are two buttons that looks like a Forward arrow and a Redo arrow.. What exactly do these mean?)

Ok, finally got the image to work on a USB flash drive I went out and bought and formatted to HFS+ then burned the .dmg to that... I got i would say 40% into the install when the display went into sleep mode and I cannot get video from either output... Is this normal or no? I can hear the hard drive writing stuff and the flash drive is being accessed.

If its still going then just wait it out. It's an older one so itll be awhile. When it's finished it will auto reboot.

Glad to hear you got it all loaded up! Forgot to check this thread redface.gif but yes Mac's have been able to boot from / recover from a USB drive for quite a while now, they were ahead of the technology curve in that sense for a while!
