So I believe the cards aren't voltage locked, just the overclocking software isn't working 100% with all these new cards. I know a handful are voltage locked, but I believe most problems stem from mere compatibility issues.

yup a friend with a so called locked 7970 just unlocked it with 2.2.5 it is the vaporX

I would be very surprised if this isn't the case with nearly all of the cards. Although if the returns were literally in the thousands I could see them doing this - it's unlikely they would change even something minor in the fab once the initial setup and tooling were in place. The costs involved aren't exorbitant but they aren't trivial either - and the bottom line is that the majority of people dropping $400-500 on GPUs aren't just picking up something that's 'good enough'.

Enthusiast dollars are significant in terms of flagship product sales... everyone else is fine with a lower/cheaper model anyway. I'd be amazed if any of the vendors 'hobbled' their cards intentionally. They'd be much more likely to simply include a card that stated that fully functional returns (or "non-defective" probably) would require a 10-15% restocking fee or something like that.

After all - someone returning 3 cards (which can be resold for full price anyway) in order to get a great overclocker - is still a customer buying (at least) one of their highest priced products. biggrin.gif

Mines would not work with afterburner nor trixx. I know it's not a compatibility issue because my friend's 7950 would overvolt like ca chief.
