GTX 680 or AMD 7970 - Page 5

I will post 3DMark 11, Heaven 3.0, Sleeping Dogs, and Metro 2033 benchmark results tomorrow night. Unfortunately, I am limited to these because I no longer have the Lightning. For more tests, I will see if someone over in the Lightning club will be willing to help out.

Praying that I get a good overclocker biggrin.gif

Having owned a number of 7970s (Sapphire OC, Gigabyte, and MSI Lightning), I would say my 680 Lightning sample would pummel / edge out the 7970 samples that I've owned primarily because none of them were good overclockers. The Gigabyte was voltage locked therefore on stock voltage could only manage 1125/1600, the Sapphire was unstable past 1175/1650, and the Lightning was limited to 1210/1700. I am hoping for ~1300/1800 with the Matrix.

Did your order ship with the NEVER SETTLE game bundle. With the latest 12.11 beta drivers a HD 7970 (1250 Mhz) will beat a GTX 680(1350 Mhz) consistently. You can go for a benchmark slugfest with GTX 680 Lightning owners. Also games are going to show bigger differences than benchmarks like heaven 3.0. BF3, Sleeping Dogs, Metro 2033, Crysis Warhead, MOH Warfighter will be faster. the margins you can let us know.

Raghu - I overnighted it this morning and got it with the NEVER SETTLE package. I am negotiating with some Lightning buddies right now as we speak. Check back tomorrow y'all.

Muropaketti did some testing, 680 lightning vs 7970 matrix platinum.

Finnish site and the translated version is pretty bad.

2560x1440, 306.97 and 12.11 drivers were used.

680 vs 7970? Today, that question doesn't apply anymore. The 7970 is beating the 680 easily in everything except load power consumption (who cares about that on OCN ?).

12.11 + NEVER SETTLE game bundle = 7970 is a MUCH MUCH better buy then the 680 right now. People shouldn't even consider the 680 anymore. Overpriced and underperforming by a wide margin compared to the 7970.

Sleeping Dogs tested with Normal AA at 2560 x 1600. thats just a FAIL. hardocp tested with High AA.

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/10/16/asus_matrix_hd_7970_platinum_video_card_review/4

BF3 tested with 2x MSAA. These cards can easily do 4x MSAA when overclocked . FAIL.

Crysis 2 tested with Extreme settings. Other than Objects everything else can be set to Ultra. Ultra on objects uses unnecessrily high levels of tesselation which has a severe affect on fps with no IQ improvements. Definitely playable. FAIL

http://techreport.com/review/21404/crysis-2-tessellation-too-much-of-a-good-thing

Ghost Recon Future Soldier tested without Ambient occlusion and maxing out shadows and volumetric light.

Atleast when they tested max overclocks they should have tried higher settings. Other than Ghost Recon every other game was at close to 70 fps. they definitely could have pushed higher.

Take it easy, whole point was to show you some data. I quoted you but wasnt meant just for you. Im aware that if you crank up the settings hd7970 will widen the cap but then some games would be unplayable. Pretty good round up with a playable settings id say.

How 'bout a little less "fail" and a little more "thanks for the info"?

Seriously, your personal preferences are not the global standard for testing graphics cards.
