GTX 680 or AMD 7970 - Page 6

I am going to be installing the 12.11 drivers tonight to play some Borderlands 2 at 6048x1200 on my single 7970. Even with the 12.8 I am getting 60 fps so can't wait to try this. I may just have to throw my 9800GX2 in there as a physX card after seeing some of the videos of the game with PhysX running. You can have the best of both worlds, it just takes a little work 8].

Hello all,

I apologize for the delayed results I promised but here is a little eye candy for y'all

Card is an absolute monster and the best overclocking 7970 sample I've EVER owned. Here is how it performs in 3DMark 11 at stock using Catalyst 12.11 beta.
http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/4758565

And here is how my 680 Lightning performs in 3DMark 11. Also at stock.
http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/4584504

A win in 3DMark 11 is huge considering Futuremark's benchmark 'was' Kepler's biggest advantage in synthetics. It is currently sitting at 1245MHz/1750MHz on STOCK voltage biggrin.gif and in Sleeping Dogs benchmark it holds a 7-8 average FPS advantage over the 680 Lightning @ 1372MHz/1771MHz. At ~1300MHz/~1800MHz, I am predicting a 10 FPS average advantage over the 680 @ 1372/1771. (Screen shots to come shortly here). Once this weekend is over and I have more time, I will toy with it some more and begin raising the voltage.

After reading stacks of reviews, 6 months of experience with both camps, hours upon hours of gaming with both flagships, and with the release of 12.11 Beta. I can say without a shadow of a doubt; the 7970 is the fastest card today and has been since 12.7 beta.

Nvidia's response remains to be seen...

I really hope you won't have problems with voltage tweaking as W1zard from TPU smile.gif

that is awesome. thumb.gif 1245 Mhz on stock voltage. get that bad ass to 1300 Mhz. At what settings did you run Sleeping Dogs . Is it High AA or Extreme AA. also if you can post BF3 , Metro 2033, Crysis 2, fraps scores it would be very nice. you really are living on the bleeding edge of technology. biggrin.gif

Thats a monster... Ive yet to see maximum stable overclock for this beast after voltage increment..

Sub'd very interested about max clocks and the voltage required to achieve it. Also wondering if a DCII waterblock would fit this monster. The sky is the limit with this card if you can keep it cool.

Is this Sapphire Vapor-X Ghz good card if we compare it to other 7970 cards?
Should i change the "family" and go back to the Ati cards? I know that i loose physix, but that doesn't matter.
You should have just went with SLi GTX 670's.
Going from a single 670 to a single 7970 is a waste of time and not even close to being worth it IMO, although I can understand your frustration with a poor overclocker.

To this day I don't trust Palit as a brand.
I have my settings near maxed at 1600p and I don't drop below 60FPS in BF3 or Borderlands2.
And in some games like Borderlands 2, PhsyX matters A LOT.

Going from 670 to 7970 is not much of a huge upgrade., but i wont call this a completely bad decision either..
7970 is faster and performs extremely well when overclocked..
Obviously he would be missing out on some eye candy with lack of physX in borderlands 2. But he probably would make that up by much superior performance of AMD cards in Medal of honour, battlefield 3, Sleeping dogs, hitman etc...

Here's the new drivers at stock clocks.
warultra.jpg
Looks pretty close to me, 670 edges a reference 7950, 680 nips at the 7970.
Although yes there are many games now that favor the Radeons, some favor the GTX's.
