Stay with the old or try out the new?

In my LGA2011 build, I'm currently running an Antec HCG 750W power supply. I'm adding a second GTX550 ti to this build and from all the calculations (with the online calculators) I've done, show that I am very close to maxing out this PSU. The calculator is showing 727W of 750w used once I install the second card bigeyedsmiley.png. My other rig has a Thermaltake 850W TR2 RX in it, I would love to switch it and in the process also get some fancy sleeved cables for it, but I am leary because of the bad reviews for their other powersupply (750W). All the research I have been able to do shows that the 850 doesn't suffer from the problems of the 750, but considering the investment of everything else, it kinda freaks me out. I was able to find out that the Cougar 850 Modular PS is the same as the Thermaltake. I don't know if bronze certification means anything but the Thermaltake is Bronze certified.

Would I be better off running the system the way it is with the Antec, running at near 100%? Or switching to the 850W?

Im sorry but 2 550 ti are not going to push a 750 watt power supply.

ive had 4 460 on a 750 watt and was pulling 720 at the wall full loading with 4 x 460 folding and the cpu folding as well.

The calculator is extremely wrong somehow (although, it's easy to make them be extremely wrong).  The 750W HCG even has enough power for your system if it had two GTX 580s in it:

http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/geforce_gtx_580_sli_review,14.html

With two GTX 580s under full load, their test system caused their power supply to pull 719W from the wall outlet.  The CPU was idling, so we should add about 150W.  That makes the PSU pulling about 869W from the wall outlet.  If their PSU is 85% efficient while pulling 869W from the wall, then that would mean the system is pulling 738W from the PSU.

I didn't look hard enough for a GTX 550 Ti SLI review, but I had this link handy so there.  :)

Which PSU calculator did you use?

Thanks guys, that's why I come here.

I used this one:
http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

I also tried the one at Newegg, which was close, but didn't include all the fans I have (total of six running of the PS and 3 off the mobo).

Now if I could just stand not messing with this rig for a while..... Too much cool stuff on this group that keeps me wanting to keep messing with it.biggrin.gif

You're welcome.

If you'd like to see what made this calculator so inaccurate, then I can show you.  All you would have to do is run the calculator again, but this time click the calculator's built-in Print button.  After that, upload a screenshot of the page that you get from it (the printable page of the calculator's results).

I usually recommend that no one use these calculators and instead just come to Overclock.net.  :)
