Advice needed on MSI Z77A-GD55

Thread Starter
I've seen a review of this mobo on motherboards.org, the review was fairly positive but when I googled for issues I got a bit reluctant. The issues ranged from rebooting loops to processors not overclocking manually and remaining stable (that is, without the OC Genie II).

1. Now I need to know whether these issues are isolated/random or consistent?

2. Is there any fix for these issues by MSI?

3. Is this mobo worth buying?

Remember I'm asking about the GD55 not the more expensive GD65.

Personally, I try to avoid MSI boards if at all possible.. I know they're not *all* bad, but.. I've heard some horror stories, yeah.

I used a z77a gd55 for a while, I never saw the issues you describe. No boot loops unless REALLY trying to push the memory, otherwise failed OC recovery worked well. I never tried the OC genie but had no issues manually overclocking. No stability issues running daily at 4.5Ghz & overclocked to 5.7Ghz without issues.
It wouldn't be my first choice for a subzero cooled extreme benching board, but it is capable & would be fine for a daily driver.

Thanks for the encouraging reply. Now I've got two conflicting answers and am double-minded about the board. As for overclocking, I've never even tried it, but intend to do some casual or mild overclocking (OC Genie II) in my next PC build. So sub-zero cooled overclocking isn't even on my list.

Am waiting for more replies/feedback.......

1. How would the Z77A-GD65 compare to the GD55 with regards to issues/problems?

2. If I don't want to SLI are there still any benefits of buying the GD65 instead of the GD55?

The only real differences physically are the gd65 has 3 more phases, the debug LED & dual bios, other than that pretty much identical. I didn't really use the gd55 for very long but it & the gd65 were very similar for OCing. If you never switch bios' or look at a debug LED go with the gd55, the extra phases don't really make any difference for normal overclocks.

I have not used the Z77a-gd55 but i do have the Z77a-g45 the next board under the gd55. I have not had any issues really. Overclocked my 2500k to 4.5 real easy. It also has sli if i want to go that way. MSI boards have gotten better lately. Alot better quality compared to a few years ago.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

FTW 420, what do you mean by 3 more phases? Are these power phases, if so are the power cables the same for both (GD65 & GD55), i.e. 24 pin for the MOBO and 8-pin for the CPU?

Also some MSI mobos come with a supplementary power socket on the mobo itself for the PCI-E slots (for Graphic Cards), is that only in the M-power series (correct me if I'm wrong) or does any of these mobos have that too?

3 more power phases around the cpu, & all of the connectors on both boards are identical. Looking at the boards none of the z77 gd55, gd65 or gd80 have the supplemental pci-e power, the mpower has a 6 pin supplemental.
