Any audiophiles around? =D

Thread Starter
Hi there, first off I wanna say that I am 100% new to the Overclock forums. So with that said, howdy!

I have been saving up to make an awesome rig with the next generation of cards (crossing fingers for March 2013 being the latest), and I'm on the edge of my seat to purchase something that I can use now and move over when I do the complete overhaul. I have personally never utilized a proper sound card before, and now that I am playing Dead Space (thanks Origin "sale") I am really wondering the performance difference between a proper sound card and my onboard.

I am wanting this sound card primarily for gaming, and from reading multiple reviews of cards on Newegg a lot of people make statements around "this card is not that great for gaming, but great for music and other audio" etc. Can anyone here recommend me a great sound card for my gaming purposes?

Lastly, do I need to get better headphones to operate with the sound card recommended? I own the previous version of the Sennheiser HD 202's (Link below, but I don't think I have the "II" editions). I always see headset's advertising their surround sound capabilities, but I never see this advertised with headphones? I'm willing to spend some cash on some proper headgear and sound card for my future and current build, all within moderate reason. I am thinking anywhere from $100-150, but that range depends on how tempting the recommendations are!

(Own previous edition of these) -->http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826106508&name=All-Headphones-Accessories

TL;DR:

I want a sexy sound card and Headphones for gaming at 7.1/5.1 surround. Any recommendations? =D

The most popular sound cards that I've seen online are

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102033&name=Sound-Cards

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132010&Tpk=stx%20sound%20card

I prefer the Creative drivers so I got a the first one.

I probably should have put more thought into the thread title and be a little wary when stating "audiophiles" lol. Those were a bit more expensive than what I was thinking initially but you answered my thread appropriately. When I stated the $100-150 I was hoping that would include the card and headphones together.

However, that is if you guys even think I need new headphones, otherwise I may put it all towards a card. And regardless, I may go over my budget. Reading the reviews for those cards you linked is pretty awesome.

sorry dude but a good quality sound card is usually $100+ and good quality headphones could go anywhere up to $1000.

Unless you have ancient onboard audio I'd say spend the $150 for a quality headset. Contrary to belief the best bang/buck is generally in the $80-$150 range for a good headset. There's a popular headset in that range, I'm sure someone will provide it (something 700, by Audio-Technica I think?).

Dedicated sound cards aren't that big a deal (now that onboard isn't complete garbage) unless you get hard to drive cans or need DDL or the spatial processing effects the provided software comes with.

Edit: Think this may of been them http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AUD-ATH-A700X-Technica-Headphones/dp/B000E9VKUQ/ref=pd_sim_e_14

Those Audio Technicas look pretty robust. I think the combination of the 53mm drivers should make those a great choice.

Fostex T50RP are very robust for the price especially after they've been modded.

Not enough info. Do you want them just for gaming or do you want them for music?

Oh? Now you want them for music too, what kind of music do you listen to?

Before making this post I was checking out the Sennheiser HD-280 PRO headphones, they seemed to be a pretty standard pick, but those Audio Technica ones looked really nice. Do you think the price difference makes it a solid choice over http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-280-Pro-Headphones/dp/B000065BPB/ref=sr_1_7?s=aht&ie=UTF8&qid=1350533677&sr=1-7? I really am a noobie in this whole sound thang.

I primarily do want these headphones/card for gaming purposes.
