EDIT: scrap the m50s for gaming. I think the a700s are better for gaming, but not 100% sure

and
probably a xonar dg or used xonar dx if you can find it for cheap.

Honestly you don't need to buy 500+ dollar headphones or 500+ dollar DACs.
I had a xonar DX and a ATH-A700 the closed version of those ad700s and then upgraded to an ODAC+O2 amp and Sennheiser HD650s.
You can hear a difference I'll admit, but after like 200 dollar headphones I dont believe you're going to notice any severe changes to the sound.
The noticeable changes would be from onboard to dedicated card+ good sub 200 headphones. Thats my personal opinion :S

Thats my 2 cents :/
Good Luck and I hope everything goes well for ya biggrin.gif

Would not recommend the HD-280s.

For just gaming the AD700s are the best you're going to buy if you just want competitive gaming for your price range.

For immersive gaming, look at the Ultrasone Pro 550s.

Ok guys! I have decided to hell with my initial budget! I am wanting to get some nice audio equipment, and have fallen into a final showdown between the cards and headphones. Which combination would you guys recommend? Keep in mind this is primarily for gaming purposes in 5.1/7.1, and if you have any final opinions on alternate products I'm always open to re-evaluate. However, these are the current decisions I have come down to.

Headphones

As for which of those two headphones to get you should really see if you can demo them both at a local shop, as that is such a personal preference type of thing.

The sound card you should get is the essence in my opinion. It has a better headphone amp and overall a better feature set and components out of box.

I'd personally recommend the A700s, the E09k amp, and the ASUS Xonar DSX 7.1 sound card. Higher end sound cards are a joke IMO and getting an amp on them is even worse.

The A700 has one of the better soundstages for a closed headphone. Being closed, you get more immersed into gaming. Plus, IMO, the comfort is not matched. No limit to hours of use.

The E09k provides a great look to your setup, as well as being a great headphone amp. I cannot LIVE without proper desktop sound control. The A700 doesn't need an amp, but it helps IMO.

The DSX is where you'll get your gimmick content from. Plus, it'll be an upgraded DAC from your onboard most likely.

it's far better to invest money into the headphone than waste money buying a headphone amp they don't need.

Well yes, but he's obviously not buying this stuff  just for music and is gaming centralized. He'd be getting the amp basically for the volume control. Is it a bit much? Probably. If I was him, I'd rather have an overall better setup, not just better headphones. Otherwise I'd just say get some other headphone, maybe the A900s or a DT series with an ODAC. But as a gaming exp, I think he'd find what I recommended to be more enjoyable.

Buying an amp for volume control is one of the stupidest things you can do.

Windows has this amazing feature called volume where you can slide it up and down, it's amazing.

Honestly that is just dumb for him to get an amp.
I used A700s with xonar DX. After I built my O2 amp and hooked that up. In all honesty there wasnt really any difference from unamped- and amped save for the little volume knob.

It would just be a waste of money, I say get a pair of a700s or ad700s depending on closed vs open and get a xonar dsx or dx. No need to go unnecessarily high budget for this

LOL

Sorry this is such a touchy subject people. I'm sorry I like to have precise control over my volume without having to use buttons on my keyboard or using Windows... Pretty sure I never said he needed it either. Just that it would make his exp better.

I also don't see how it's stupid at all. Regardless of any sound quality boost, you will be able to reach higher volumes because of program limitations. Windows 7 is known for being quite. I also know a lot of people just like having a volume dial. It's not like he's asking to become an audiophile. He's a gamer wanting gamer needs.
