Battlefield 3 5760x1080. Will two 680s be enough?

So i'm going to need some advice on my next purchase. Currently I have one 680 SC+ 2gb from EVGA. I can play BF3 @ 5760x1080 on the medium preset at decent frame rates but nothing that ever exceeds 60fps. Now if i were to purchase another 680, would i be able to run much higher frame rates in ultra or at least fps that's 50+ in 64 multiplayer games? The card i'm looking at is another 680 SC+ 2gb.

You should expect to get about 70-80% scaling (% increase in FPS vs. what you have now) by adding another 680. Ultra is probably do-able at that res w/SLI 680's, but you'll almost certainly need to stick w/FXAA only (no MSAA).

Also, if you've not already, I would very much recommend OC'ing your CPU as much as possible, because 64-player online games are typically quite CPU-intensive.

Two 680's 2GB will be more than enough so long as you don't try to max out the AA. I ran the game at max w/ 2 580's (FXAA) and I would rarely see FPS drops below 40, 45. Enjoy!thumb.gif

The reason you'd need to run only FXAA is not just cuz of the lack of GPU grunt, it's the vram capacity, which as I'm sure you know doesn't increase with SLI. To pull off that resolution, fully maxed with 4xMSAA, and never drop below 60fps (is that what you mean by 'perfection'?) would require tri-SLI with the 4GB version of the card (or tri-fire 7970 3GB's). MSAA w/deferred rendering engines (as BF3 uses) uses a ton of extra vram.

yeah 4GB GTX 680 would be required for Ultra 4X MSAA in BF3 at 5760 x 1080. and even if you overclock your GTX 680s hitting 60 fps would be difficult. you could hit maybe 45 - 50 fps.

I get roughly avg 60fps ultra I think max fxaa 2xmsaa no AO no blur @ 6000x1080 on 64 player servers. My cards OCd roughly same as 680sc sli. Don't worry about cpu oc... Your sli cards will be bottlenecks d at this res before cpu.

At that high of a resolution its not necessary to go so high with the AA. Get the two gtx680's and if a third is needed then go for it. I think GTx680 in Sli is pretty impressive and u should be very happy.

But honestly until monitors come out with bezel-less screens I would highly recommend going with a 30" screen that has a 2500x1600 resolution. First, Its not as demanding as the multi-screen resolution and its so much more Pleasant. Trust me!

On my rig with transparency AA set to 8x super sampling and all settings to max (except FXAA switched off) the single player is incredible. 200 fps all the way. Multiplayer though is another story. In 64 player matches the fps drops into the 60s fairly frequently. This is especially evident in the armored kill maps which are a absolutely gorgeous but definitely slow things down. The game scales well upto 2 cards and beyond that you get major diminishing returns but at the resolution you would be fine with medium settings with 2 cards. Somehow Xfire and AMDs function a lot better in this game.
