It'll be Android 4.2, it may still use the name Jelly Bean as it isn't much of a incremental update. We'll see.
I don't care what they name it or what version it is. It doesn't really matter.

I would be really PO'd if Google went and announced a new phone OS before my damn GSIII (Sprint) even gets 4.1. mad.gif

That's no one's fault but Samsungs. Google is not going to stop updating their OS just because manufacturers are unable to keep up with the latest Android. Who's the one to really blame? the manufacturers for making so many phones and using custom UI's such as TouchWiz, Motoblur, LG UI, etc.

You can either:
A) Get a Nexus device
B) Root and custom flash your phone to CM10 (or any JB ROMs)

Jelly Bean is definitely a treat to use smile.gif Project Butter is yummy with 60FPS + Vsync

Nexus devices account for probably 2% of all Android devices out there since there are only 4 of them (Nexus One, Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, and Nexus 7).

The fact that Android is open-source doesn't excuse the problem though. Not everyone has the capability or knowledge to root their phones.

It's not a excuse though... it's Open Source. New Windows comes out (in this case, lets say that Windows 7 -> Windows 8 is a free upgrade), are the manufacturers responsible for updating their PCs to Windows 8? No... it's the manufacturer's responsibility.

Google does the firmware and use Nexus devices as their flagship device. Google isn't responsible for updating other devices. Like I said, it doesn't help that manufacturers go out of their way in an attempt to try and "differentiate" themselves by making a custom UI -- in the end causing longer updates because they have to port their framework and merge with the newest Android version.

On the top of that, after the manufacturer finishes updating it. It has to be sent to the carrier (VZW, Sprint, TMo, AT&T) to be approved and installed with their bloatware applications.

If the carrier doesn't approve of the update, the manufacturer has to comply with the carrier's request.... once that's done, its then submitted AGAIN and has to be approved. Then it goes in a OTA.

Not to mention, some devices being released (when a new Android version is already present) but is running older firmware. What's the excuse for that?

Whereas, Nexus devices... updates comes out, Google releases update and everybody gets it in OTA batches (or you can manually install it via link).
Edit: Nexus GSM versions. Galaxy Nexus on VZW & Sprint has to be approved.

As far as rooting, the workaround the latest version is there. Not my problem if someone is too lazy and don't want to alter their phone but complain about not having the latest updates when they can do something about it but won't.

http://developer.android.com/about/dashboards/index.html Jelly Bean accounts for 1.8%.
