Power supply over powering hardware?

Thread Starter
In the past 3 months 4 of my fans have died. The fans themselves are not even that old, one is about 2 years old so i understand that one but then 2 scythe fans went that are about a year old and then a brand new fan that came with my new case has gone thats about 2 months old.

What could be causing my fans to die like this?

My friend pointed out that it could possibly be the power supply voltages are off and its over powering the fans and blowing them, do you think this could be it? and try testing it with a multimeter reader?

One last thing which has nothing to do with this at all is I just reformatted with my new hard drive, i created a seperate partition for windows with 50gb which is C:/ then the rest which is D:/ and my other hard drive E:/, is there a way to stop C being used? like stop having stuff being saved to it and specifically leave it just to windows? i changed my directory in the regedit to D:program files but then it gives me errors when trying to install stuff because its trying to go to C still, any ideas?

No such thing as overpowering hardware.

Definitely not the PSU. The only thing I can think of is A: the fans are getting clogged up with dust B: the fans were defective to begin with.

Or C: They were cheap, crappy fans.

Just read the entire post, two of them could have been duds, but the Scythe fans should be working fine.

Thats what i thought at first when the cooler master stock case fan broke but when the scythes went out it made me wonder, its not dust build up because i just dusted everything 2 months ago when i rebuilt my computer and it hasnt gotten dusty since. i guess ill just have to start replacing fans.

any thoughts on the second part bout my partition for windows?

You can move the shortcuts to my documents. Just go into the properties for My documents and My Picture and anything else you want to move and change the shortcut target to read D:\ instead of C:\. There's a better description n one of the stickies in the SSD subforum on Windows installations, it's a pretty common need, at least for moving the user files.

Don't try to move program files itself, just reinstall as many of you nonessential programs as you can into some directory on the partition. There's no reason to use any advanced tactics when there's no call for it. Alternately, just reinstall Windows and give your system partition enough space to accommodate any programs you think you need, 50GB is not enough space.

As Pheadrus said, you cannot have a PSU overpower hardware. The hardware will only draw the power it needs from the PSU, not the other way around. What fans were they? I know that Scythe Slipstreams are nasty for dying when they are placed vertical.

I don't think he meant over powered. Think he meant over voltage.

yes i meant over voltage not over powering.

after messing around with the cables, i found out one of them wasnt working because of the adapter plugged it straight to mobo and it worked, 2nd fan didnt work at all tested multiple power connections (scythe fan) and the 3rd fan was stiff to turn by hand. dont know how this all happened iv never had fans die on me except for the past 3 months

If the fan does not rotate freely then its probably jammed by dust/dirt. Something like a long hair can jam even a brand spanking new fan. Take the fan apart and see how dirty it is.
