Is my 3770k safe?

Thread Starter
Been seeing what i can get for overclocks and i seem to be getting a stable 4.5ghz on air cooling @ 1.2v. now i know that this is more than fine but after running prime i peak at 85c. now obviously i wont be getting this with normal use but is this all safe to run for around 16 hours a day? id like this chip to last for as long as possible so i dont want any ill effects on my cpu. it seems it doesnt pass 70 when running intensive cpu games. thoughts? -thanks

specs in sig if needed

It's at the threshold in Prime95, but fine if it isn't hitting anything higher in your other programs. I would consider getting a better cooler (or another fan for your current cooler if you only have one) for added security. Personally, anything over 75 in Prime95 is a bit warm IMO, but then again, IB does run hotter than SB.

In the end, it's your decision, but most will agree that lower temps will ensure the longevity of your processor.

I wish I could do 4.5GHz @ 1.2 V biggrin.gif

Air maximum is around 1.35 V as anything greater will push temperatures into an uncomfortable zone (90+ Degrees Celsius). You may be able to hit 4.8GHz or possibly higher with a better air cooler. And if you are wondering, 1.35 V is perfectly safe. I've been running my 3570K at this voltage since May.

105*c is the tj max
No worries with that temp.

85C is a little on the hot side in Prime, but 70s during gaming is safe enough. Maybe take a look at your case cooling - that video card dumps the heat in the case, so your in-case ambient might be pretty high.
