Just some points to consider. I think the 680 wins in raw performance, but even if you simply deny that that is the case, the above features make a compelling case for Kepler EVEN AT 10-20% performance deficit in framerates (which I believe does not exist).

1080p 4XAA sure, 8XAA or 1440p+ AMD pulls ahead as 680's 256 bit Bus and 2GB Vram gimps itself.

GPU Boost is only useful in skewing Benchmark in Nividia's favor.

It actually make 680's OC ceiling less than that of 7970's

680 by default will run 1100 Mhz due to GPU Boost+Kepler Boost(you get extra boost not guaranteed on the box), without voltage regulation you rarely get anything over 1350Mhz on OC= 23% OC

7970 by default runs a 925(or 1000Mhz for Ghz cards), since they don't have either thermal throttling or voltage lock, 1200Mhz is fairly common for an OC = 30% OC.

Ofc most people just stare at the benchmarks skewed by GPU+Kepler Boost, and don't realize 7970 can OC a lot further percentage wise.

...Guys, the OP asked a question. There are plenty of other places for the 680 vs 7970 debate. Seeing as he never even used the number "680" in his post, I don't think this is one of those places.

@OP: I think consensus is get the 7970 for the stability and reliability of a single GPU card over the riskyness of a dual GPU card, although I would also urge you to consider what I said in my previous post about 6950 + 6990 for trifire.

Kepler runs cooler than GCN. Granted, the 7970 can take the extra heat, but it does warm up your room or case more, which could make Kepler the more attractive option.

Compairing a stock 680 vs a stock 7970 is not fair given stock 680 runs with a 9% Auto-Overclock(1100/1006) while the stock 7970 runs with 0%. 7970 can easily be manual OCed to reach 1000Mhz on stock voltage(only AMD didn't need such cheap ploy at that time, not until Nividia came up with their Kepler Boost), equaling the benchmarks of 7970GE which does surpass 680 in most benches. 7970 GE vs 680 is a fair comparison since both had Auto-Overclock/Boost features.

That's Nividia's ploy to mask how they pre-overclocked their GK104 chip almost to the limit and actually have at least 7% less (Calculation done in my previous post) Overclocking headroom against a 7970.

Intel Turbo Boost could also be manipulated to skew benchmarks, hence why Gigabyte and ASUS have Mutli-Core Enhancement(another Auto-OC feature) on their 7-series Motherboards to skew Benches in their favor and help lazy people who don't touch Bios.

7970 can run most games just fine on high settings at 5870x1080. That also leaves rooms to get another one to supercharge the FPS. Wiith the 6990, you already have 2 GPUs, and adding a third isn't going to be as efficient as going to from a single 7970 to 2 in the future.

Piece of advice, do NOT xfire 6950s on a thurban. I used to have 6950s on one and never realised how much it held them back until I got a 2500k

BTW I upgraded from 6950s xfire to 1 7970 initially and it was just over all better. No regrets.

I got a 2nd 7970 because I just don't have any sense.

I actually usually have xfire off because one card is good enough.

That 1300mhz 7970 is an absolute monster, wonder how much better that 680 woulda fared with a 7000mhz memory clock instead of a 6550 since it's mainly bandwidth starved

680? I believe the choice is between a 6990 and a 7970. 7970 without a doubt. No multi -GPU issues.
