Literally, my entertainment "unit" is a bottom cabinet without doors, essentially making it a deep bookshelf. If I put the receiver in it, it would have about 2 inches on the sides and maybe 3 on the top. The manual recommended 12 inches in every side, so I'm not sure if it's a good idea or not.

It should be OK. One of mine sits with less than 1/2 and inch on the top and so far it has been OK, bearing in mind it's one I don't mind losing. Try it out and just keep a close eye on how warm it is getting.

^This. It all comes down to heat so it depends a lot on how powerful the amp is and how hard you run it.

It's a 460W receiver powering a 5.1 system with 75W center channel, and 50W satellites. (Which looking now, apparently the peak is 40W higher than the receiver is rated for, but I don't feel to need to shake the walls.
) Most of the time, it's for records, and other stereo sound, and it's never gotten warm enough even after hours on that I can't leave my hand on the top for a while uncomfortably. It's noticeably warm, but not hot like touched a recently turned off GPU (learned that the hard way...

It'll be okay unless you crank it up. I had a nice Yamaha receiver in a similar setup, no front door, about an inch on the sides, and about 2" on top, open in the front and at least 3" in the back. It was fine for a couple years until I threw a party and was rocking the house and had it turned up loud for a long time. Long story short, it got too hot and died. I now have my Marantz receiver on top of the av cabinet, unobstructed by anything.
