Hi

My Laptop has died recently, so I want to build a Desktop machine.

I have taken appart my old machine and have found my old MSI K8N SLI motherboard.

I wanted to know what are the highest specifications I can build onto it i.e

Best CPU would an I5 work?
How much RAM it says in the manual up to 4GB but can I somehow build in more?
What is the highest Graphics Card I can use?

Regards

Oliver

Oliver,

That motherboard is pretty much junk, you'll not be able to frankenstein a machine from it. You'll need the following.

Motherboard - the asus p8z77 LX is a cheap board and quite reliable
Processor - i5 2500k or the 3550k (sandybridge and ivybridge, pick either one)
Memory - some DDR3 1600Mhz would be fine, the Ripjaws are quite good or the corsair dominators.
GPU - any GPU will work in this

If you can give me a budget I can help you a bit more.... But no, an i5 will not go into that motherboard.

HAHA thats what I thought.

I have a budget around £400.

I need the machine mainly for my studies this involves:

virtualization
streaming
a bit of gaming ( mainly strategy games )

Right,

With that sort of budget i'd keep an eye out on ebay mate, I recently picked up the follow for £500

23.3" acer monitor
i5 2500k
p67 asus sabertooth motherboard
16 gb of memory
2x500gb drives
1 750gb drive
6970 GPU
antec 902v3 case
coolermaster GT heatsink or something

So you see, you can get some pretty epic deals on the bay. It is in all honesty going to be your best chance to get something that's pretty decent. In addition to that, you're doing virtualisation so you should be able to give the machine a really good going over before taking it off the persons hands..
