Titanium HD help

Thread Starter
Hi there,

After just installing my new soundcard and disabling on board audio in my BIOS, i'm experiencing some difficulties. I have installed all the drivers and relevant software but here is where I am struggling to get everything set up optimally and hopefully you can help.

1. I'm not sure of the mode I should have it in... Entertainment, Game or Audio Creation. Now I do game and I watch a little bit of entertainment, but is this mode important?

2. I can't seem to get my microphone to work correctly. Doesn't seem to want to work in TS, what settings should I alter or tweak. I find myself getting lost in the software sometimes so you may need to explain if it's not straight foward.

3. Any other tweaks that I should make to give me the best experience possible?

Titanium HD
Fiio E9
Beyerdynamic DT880 Premium 600 Ohm.

i leave mine in game mode so i have access to the EQ and CMSS-3D (which i only used briefly and am now back to leaving it off). some suggest for music playback to have it in Audio Creation Mode and bit-matched playback selected. for me, and my ears and my 256kbps bitrate MP3's, i don't notice a difference. i also fail most of those website 'MP3 bitrate A/B tests' so take my advice for what it's worth.

have you configured your microphone in the windows sound control panel? also in the creative audio console under the mixer tab, make sure that microphone 1 (or 2) is not muted. there's a speaker icon below the volume adjustment and it'll have a red X over it if it's muted. also make sure the volume level is not turned all the way down.

you should play with some of the gaming options in Game Mode - CMSS-3D and Crystalizer. i prefer to leave both off but some people like them. i'd be cautious with enabling Crystalizer though. it attempts to make up for data lost during MP3 compression and tries to fill in information at the extreme ends of the frequency spectrum. it'll give everything an exagerated 'V shape'.

if you're using a dedicated amp you'll want to use the RCA line out on the back of your card. since the E9 only has 3.5mm input you'll need to use the RCA-3.5mm cable supplied with your Titanium HD.

Thanks for the information, it is much appreciated. I have tried CMSS-3D and didn't like it, especially not for music at least.

I think I have gotten it to work on TS but the quality seems somewhat low, but that may be a setting I have on team speak that is influencing that. I will continue to find out if I can improve that or I may have to buy a better microphone.

I'm a little unsure on the last section of your post regarding the usage of the ports I have available. At the moment, I have Beyers -> Fiio -> generic 3.5mm cable -> sound card. I believe I have found the cable you mention is supplied with my card. 3.5mm one end then at the other end, splits into two. However, I've never used one of these before and the two connections at the one end don't seem to have any colour coding on them at all. Which way round should I use this?

Sorry but this isn't really my strong zone, i'm trying to get into my audio a little more!

well i'm an audio noob too, relatively. so hopefully this isn't a case of the blind leading the blind.

my (limited) understand of it: the headphone out of the titanium hd has it's own power amplification circuit. by using the 3.5mm headphone out and your E9 you're 'double amping'. some say this induces distortion and some say it's not a concern. the way i see it there's no harm in using the RCA line-out to avoid the possibility of distortion. i plugged in the RCA cables on the back of the Titanium HD and then (to put my mind at ease) went to the windows sound control panel and ran the 'Test'. it sends audio signals to the left/right channels ("left channel" to the left ear, "right channel" to the right ear). that way i could determine they were playing correctly.

Ok, I'll run the 3.5 from the back of the amp and the 2 connections to the back of the soundcard. Hopefully be able to work out which two I should plug them into.

Creative's drivers are and have always been terrible for many people. Go here http://www.hardwareheaven.com/pax-download-pcie-x-fi-series/ and try his newest titanium HD suite. I leave on audio creation mode most of the time. The crystallizer sucks imo, and I don't use EQ. The 3D effect can be nice for some FPS games, but if a game has software headphone surround engine built in then it will probably screw it up. Audio creation mode also let's you enable bit-matched playback, although I have no idea what that does, nor can I hear a difference.
