We covered the launch of the Calxeda-based Boston Viridis ARM server back in July. The server is makings its appearance at the UK IP EXPO 2012. Boston has been blogging about their work on the Viridis over the last few months, and one of the most interesting aspects is the fact that x86 binary translation now works on the Viridis. The technology is from Eltech, and they have apparently given the seal of approval to the Calxeda platform by indicating that the Boston Viridis was the fastest platform they had tested.

Limited use to run x86 on ARM with such overhead.... but it still does provide the path.

I get how this is important as most non-mobile assembly is written in for x86 arch, but wouldn't it be smarter to spend efforts getting OS's / Software shift to ARM? Its much more efficient I am told than legacy and archaic 86 format.

In a few years Intel will be competitive with ARM in terms of power consumption whatsoever.

It means ARM can maybe join the desktop and laptop market. That is a big deal.

Not many people program in assembly....

Most companies have no interest in changing ISA... it can be expensive and time-consuming especially older or larger code bases. Companies also license software and their vendors might not support ARM.

Intel's current mobile Atom (basically a 5-10 year old x86 core) is can compete against current top-of-the-line dual-core ARMs. The Atom uses a big more power but is also a bit faster here:

Seems like low-power Atoms would be better since architecturally, they're already a lot more powerful than any ARM-based CPU, especially under x86.
