With that out of the way, I do find it interesting that higher core counts are starting to show up on the Intel side of things.

Intel had six-cores 18 months before AMD did... Quad-cores, Deca-cores, etc.

Four GbE NIC's

Sounds to me like the basis of a very nice, low power firewall build.

This is OCN. Everything is consumer level.

A sounded marketing strategy, why wouldn't Intel like it lachen.gif

This is server-land. More cores IS better performance. That's why companies are running 1K+ core clusters.

Nope. Programs that would really utilize multi/many-core are already designed for multi/many-core.

Consumer workloads are really not that thread heavy.

8 physical cores.... not sure if HT is supported for 16 virtual cores.

Intel has had octo/deca core Xeons for years now.

Seriously, I don't understand why on earth these chips are going to have 8 cores. Must be some weak per-core performance to fit into an appropriate TDP.
Look at the use cases of micro-servers.

These are good for heavily threaded, independent, and non-intensive workloads with high variable demands. A good example would be websites. The server can shutdown entire boards if the demand is light but spin them up during peak times.

Mozilla runs a Seamicro server (512 Atoms): http://www.seamicro.com/sites/default/files/MozillaCaseStudy.pdf
Quote:
“Our investment in SeaMicro has already paid tremendous dividends. We are drawing on the order of 1/5 the power per HTTP request, and using less than 1/4 the space. This has freed room in our power envelope, and space in our
cages to increase the compute footprint, providing additional CPU cycles for our different users, while dramatically reducing our operating expenses.”

It's server-land... MOAR COREZ has been in demand for the last decade or so.

8-core atoms?

Aren't atoms sub Pentium 4 performance wise? or have they improved them.

Correct, current Atoms performance clock-for-clock is lower than a Pentium 4 but at vastly lower performance/watt. However, these rumored 8-core Atoms will be based on a new architecture that will include out-of-order execution which will increase performance. Either way, 7-10 8-core Atoms would beat a single quad-core Pentium 4 at the same power levels.

You also have to realize their competitors is ARM processors
