[TR] Intel reportedly readying next-gen Atom with eight CPU cores - Page 7

I'm confused as to why people keep bringing up netbooks/laptops. This isn't a netbook chip- it's for highly parallelized server workloads. This is hardly marketing OR a gimmick.

It doesn't stop it from being a low cost/low power Atom.
And just because it is meant for the server segment doesn't mean the innovations made in the server segment won't make it thro to the market.
Calm your panties a little bit or put some ice in them to see if you calm down.

Also if you are referring to me the Atom D525 is a desktop atom, even tho it is in a netbook it's a desktop product.
I was referring my self to the Atom being sub pentium 4 performance.

This is exactly like Hummer, it's a military vehicle. STRICT FOR MILITARIES NO CIVILIAN WILL HAVE THEM.
Now I see them pretty much everywhere, and if I turn on the TV on MTV or something I see one each 30min's either in shows or in music videos... rolleyes.gif

One core for Packet Filter, one for virus scanning, one for file compression, one for the OS, one for bittorent, one for media streaming, one for admin and logging apps, and one for routing/DNS/DHCP/samba.

^ a nice home fileserver and router.

But it will have to be cheap (either up front or electrically). You can do the same thing with a $50 Athlon II or SB Pentium.

This topic, and the article source are talking about a LP Server chip code named Avoton, based on the Silvermont architecture. Horribly paralleled desktop applications are irrelevant.
That being said, why is everyone perfectly content with slow software? The multi-thread processor has been around almost a decade and you literally cannot buy a single-core OEM PC anymore. Even the ULP embedded market is multi-core. You'd think enthusiasts and gamers would be pushing the envelope on the biggest performance increase readily available to the market at this moment. It's still funny, though. It's amazing how cyclical the hardware world is. It's just like how the Q6600 quads were a waste of money for gamers, and now quads are mainstays. 6 and 8 cores are a waste of money, and will soon be mainstays. It's just because people keep perpetuating the handicap that is the lowest common denominator. (People with older PCs or dual cores).

Sigged. I've been saying it. By the way, this handicap you speak of, it's not due to lack of innovation. It's the result of the Wintel Boxen holding back on the implementation of core-scalable consumer apps for the sake of stabbing at their competition. [topic]

Most applications benefit more from clock speed than extra threads.

Higher clock speeds are harder to achieve, generate more heat, and often come with an IPC sacrifice.

Excellent point. Architecture and process can only go so far to remedy this, not even considering the economic validity of higher speeds. So unless the diamond transistor is suddenly pulled out of the proverbial rabbit's hat, we're going to have to look to moar coars as a solution.

I think we're at a point where software optimization and new instruction sets are going to provide the greatest real performance increases. These don't require much change as far as hardware goes but can go leaps and bounds beyond a generational performance improvement.

At this point in time, it's getting very difficult to achieve higher clock speeds... getting that last 10% of your IPC results in adding 30% more heat and transistors... parallelization can only go so far in many workloads... it's about time we focus elsewhere to get our performance improvements. HSA is an integral part of this, as are new instruction sets such as AVX, AVX2, XOP, FMA3/4, CVT16, and others.

Very true but I still don't see it happening unless the industry leaders, not the majority, see it as necessary.
