Well I bet your eyes are better than your ears are and you will notice the video macroblocking and pixelation on the compressed images that they will provide on demand. HD-DVD and Blu Ray are the first time I have been able to see HD content not overly compressed and I must say I love it.

I used to be like that, buying the VHS tape or DVD of every movie I really liked so that I woulod have it to watch whenever. And it really just kind of hit me last year: I never, never, never go back and watch my DVDs. Seriously, never.

I think this is one of those cases where the industry convinced us that we really wanted or needed something, when in fact we have no real need or even intrinsic desire for it. Or maybe we did it to ourselves; remember, back when VHS was invented (70s) and/or really started to penetrate into a significant number of households (early 80s), when all of this "tape or buy the movie forever" stuff began, most people didn't even have cable TV yet. The ability to find what you wanted to watch on TV was much more difficult: you had three broadcast networks that showed crappy movies on weekends and year-old movies once a week (e.g. ABC's Saturday Night Movie); and the lucky few maybe had HBO, which wasn't even broadcasting 24 hours a day yet. So owning a personal copy of a movie was a much bigger deal than it really should be today. I think we've just got cultural leftovers from back then.

Meh, that's easily corrected. The X360's snap-in hard drive is a perfect example of a plug-and-play hard drive that can be connected to a living room set-top box today. If a Tivo or other DVR product adopted the same snap-on hard drive component, hard drive storage becomes a non-issue.

What kind of liberal BS site is that? They don't back up any of their statements with supporting evidence.

Frankly, I would rather have a huge broadband pipe to a titanic movie/TV show library to watch on demand. I'm sick of the whole "collect" mentality. I have dual 400 disc DVD players nearly full.... After watching my first HD-DVD movie, I realized I was a complete and total sucker.

I say, pay an online monthly fee to access a petabyte storage array of all things video. Watch it whenever. Hell, the download devices could easily have a terabyte array as a buffer. Internet goes down, watch stuff you have seen in the last few days.

No more collecting for me. Now, let's see the industry step up and provide some SERIOUS freaking broadband.

Yep, I think you got me there. I notice the occasional macroblocking on HD recordings on my DVR now, which aren't there in the live broadcasts. It does annoy me, but not enough to stop using my DVR. (DVRs are the best invention of the last 10 years, bar none.)

Yup, can't imagine life without my HD-DVR. Merge that with a big pipe and HD movies on demand and you have Nerdvana.

The way I look at it is I paid almost $2000 for my TV and about the same on my surround. I want to get the most out of them. Compressed formats are not getting the most out of them. Even watching my 30 hd channels on the Dish aren't as satifying as the HD DVD since dish has downrezzed their stuff. Now OTA can be a different story but thats toast in 09.
