Hey guys, my friend is stuck gaming on an older laptop and he's only getting 20-30fps on most of the games he plays (especially BF3). Here is what I told him to order (should order tonight or tomorrow):

CPU: AMD FX-8120
$160

GPU: PowerColor HD 7870
$245

MOBO: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3
$125

RAM: 2x4GB G.Skill 1600MHz
$40

PSU: Rosewill Hive 750W
$95

ODD: Lite-On DVD-RW
$18

SSD: Samsung 830 Series 128GB
$110

HDD: Seagate Barracuda Green 1.5TB
$70

CASE: Antec Three Hundred Two
$70

MONITOR: Acer S220HQLAbd Black 21.5" 5ms 1080p
$120

KEYBOARD: Microsoft Sidewinder X4
$50

MOUSE: Razer Naga Molten Special Edition
$68

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
$100

Total: $1,201

So what do yall think? And FYI, he wanted AMD. I believe I'm going to go to his house and teach him how to put it together, so there may be some pics when it gets here.. lol

Are you talking about this ram?

He's not interested in overclocking so will there be any real gain?

That's a very good budget build.

CPU: Great processor for the price.
GPU: 7870 is, yet again, a great card for the price. If he can put in some more money in the build, I would suggest getting a 7950. Either one will play @1080p exceptionally nonetheless. Texture mods, AA, and whatnot will be in favor of the 7950, obviously. I'd be on the safe side, though, and invest in a more future proof 7950.
Mobo: Best AMD price:features motherboard out there. Period.
RAM: Good
PSU: Rosewill Capstone 750w. It has more "true" power delivery than the other psu you listed (~690 vs ~650--multiply power efficiency rating by watts) because of the efficiency of the power supplies. Not to mention it will lower the electric bill a bit (not much, though, but it's better than nothing)
ODD: Good
SSD: Good. Some people say the Vertex 4 is better, and it usually is, but I have read a lot on these ssd's and people tend to say that the Samsungs are more reliable. You won't lose out on either, though. Both are great drives. If he can wait, get the Samsung 840 when it comes out.
HDD: Wow that's cheap. I remember when I got my 2TB for that price. Hopefully the prices will fall down to what they used to be. Good choice.
Case: Pretty basic case, but that's probably one of the more preferred cases in it's price range. Good choice.
Monitor: Good
Keyboard: Good, especially for the price.
Mouse: I would change your mouse to the Logitech G600. I know some people that have had both the naga and the g600, and they prefer the g600 over the naga any day. Higher DPI resolution, moar buttonz, and more ergonomic. Read some reviews on it for more info. A bit of a side story, but I tried out my friend's Razer DeathAdder, and the quality compared to my G700 isn't all that great. Logitech mice feel more solid, in my experiences.
OS: Good

Total: Close Enough.
