Help with an Audio Setup

Ok, So for my new build (and temporarily on my old one) I need a new audio set-up

So lets start with headphones

1) State your budget! 100-150

2) State your music tastes. Everything from In Flames, to Knife Party, to Incubus to Shiny toy Guns all in hi-bitrate mp3 or FLAC

3) State what perks are highly desirable: Over the ear is a must, I could use a mic, but a clip on would be fine too

4) State what products you already have and are planning on using with your recommended item (state whether you have an amp if you're looking for headphones with high impedance).

I will be using the onboard for now and then the X-fi chipset on the g1 assassin2 (which i heard is pretty good), I currently use a set of Razer Carcharias which i think were decent, and i have a set of Xears XE200pro on the way and a Cowon Z2 coming soon as well

5) State where you live and offer some sites that are known for having good prices so we can help recommend you products in your country's currency (like Amazon or ebay).

US, but ONLY new for headphones, my OCD simply wouldn't allow putting used cans over my head

Next, I could also use a Decent headphone amp for stated IEM+ player combo, maybe around $30-40

Finally I Need a set of speakers, I only have room for a 2.0 set, so I was looking at the creative gigaworks t40's (damn those are some sexy yellow cones) but i've heard mixed reviews, Bass isn't a huge concern, but i want nice sound for movies and such, I was planing on adding a sub to the t40's when i move to college and have more room. Anything with yellow cones would be great (but sound quality comes first) budget for the speakers is around $150 max

I haven't heard them personally, but a lot of people claim to love the ATH-M50s for the price. I have their little brother headphones (ATH-M30), and they're very well balanced. I'm sure the M50s are just that much better.

It seems like you're looking for something with fast drivers in them (Knife Party sort of demands that, as well as the others listed), which would reinforce my thoughts on the M50s.

When it comes to headphones with mics built-in, you're usually going to sacrifice sound quality. So I'd just pick up a nice clip-on mic to go with them. They aren't very expensive.

As far as the amp is concerned: Again I'm not personally familiar, but I believe the Fiio E6 would be something to look at near the price range you specified.

Finally, for the speakers, I've always been a huge fan of Altec Lansing for budget computer speakers. I'd take a look at the FX4021. Again, I have no personal experience with that particular model, but I would expect them to sound pretty great according to the reviews.

I'm sure none of this information is helpful, since I haven't actually used any of these items redface.gif, but just let me know what you think, and I'd be glad to keep helping you narrow things down.

Ok thank you, that did help a bit, I've been tossing around the idea of either the M50's or the DT770's, and i will definitely look into that headphone amp

id go with the DT770 pro, ive had them twice, first pair the exwife walked off with.

Senhieser HD 555 modded to HD 595 ( easy & simple mod )

Although they don't have great bass (if any) they excel in many other aspects comfort, positioning, imagery.

If your are looking for a more bass heavy alternative, I recommend the DT770 or ATH-M50
