Whole house surge protector?

Thread Starter
I have been looking at getting a whole house surge protector and was wondering if anyone had some good suggestions?

I found this one at homedepot

Joules 3400
Maximum Amperage (amps) 48000.000 A

I don't really know too much about surge protectors just that the higher the joule rating the higher it can handle.

I will be brutally honest. Its not needed. Use a good surge protector on your electronics.

I have done electrical for the past 5 almost 6 years and NEVER Seen one work. They are not effective enough and end up causing more problems then needed.

First off ignore Joule ratings! They are actually meaningless in surge protection performance.
http://www.surgeassure.com/faq.aspx#Topic31

You want to look for a surge protector that is ul listed 1449 3rd ed, has a low clamping voltage and a decent surge current capacity.

Regarding the comments made that they are useless. That is a ludicrous statement. There have been a number of power quality studies that highlight the importance of surge protection. Check out www.nemasurge.com for more info about surge protecting your home. Also surge protectors do not cause power fluctuations. You must have mistaken one of those snake oil residential PF correction devices that claim to save power on your electric bill and provide surge protection. They generally are capacitors in a fancy box and yes they can cause more harm than good.
