In need of a little business server

Hello! My mother is in need of a server for her Optometry office.

She just need extreme security and file sharing across 3 pcs from the server. So data can be dropped on the server from 1 pc to be picked up by another pc . Vice versa

I have no clue where to get started. She only needs around 500gb of space but room to expand. So i think a standard chassis is sufficient.

How would i share the files? Through a certain software? What parts to get? I greatly appreciate the help guys.

If this is just a file server I'd grab something along these lines...

i3 3220
Gigabyte B75M-D3H
2x 1TB Seagate Constellations in RAID1
2x4GB 1333 RAM

Then just add a quality power supply and case...say something like a SOLOII and a PC&P 400watt power supply.

Slap on a copy of Ubuntu or Small Business server

What kind of security does she need? Physical security, permissions-based security, general vulnerability security, etc.

General vulnerabilty a way to not allow anything access the files except the 3 other computers that she is going to use with it

She also wants and offsite backup in case of fire

why not just buy a pre-made NAS such as a Synology DS213 2 bay
http://www.synology.com/products/product.php?product_name=DS213

the management software that comes with it, synology assistant you install on each computer and at that click of a button your NAS drives is mapped to your machine's like this

very easy to just copy and paste files like from one drive to another and can be opened by all the machines that are mapped.. also they are very easy to setup and configure...

there are cheaper models as well but i would recommend this one as it is more designed for SMB's.. well worth a look

The Synology DS213 is equipped with an encryption engine which offloads the encryption calculation task away from the main CPU, helping to improve file transfer speeds of the DiskStation.

Data protection is an important matter for businesses of all sizes. High-end features previously available only on enterprise level hardware are now accessible via Synology DS213 to small and medium-sized businesses. DS213 provides share-level AES 256-bit encryption to aid in the prevention of unauthorized access attempts to the hard drives.
