New Laptop; wondering what Memory to have.

Thread Starter
Hey people, pretty new here.

I'm getting a new laptop in a few weeks; NOMAD 17 from MAINGEAR. For £2000 (actually like £1800 but delivery from America costs a lot) the basic specs:
  • 17" LED full HD
  • i7 3840QM
  • GTX 680M
  • 32GB RAM
  • 2 x 120gb Corsair SSD + RAID

It HAS to be a laptop as I'm a seafarer and you can't take a tower on a plane to a ship, and even if I could, in my cabin when my ship rolls to over 30 degrees the tower would be destroyed; I can at least secure a laptop down.

Anyway, I was just wondering what you good people think about the storage. I have a 1TB external, USB 3.0 5400 RPM Hard Drive. I was thinking about showing all Music & Movies on the external and having the important documents on both, and Games on just the Solid State Drives.

I'm going to have like... BF3, Mass Effect 1+2+3, Bioshock 1+2, GTA 5 when that comes out; basically the high-end ones which my laptop should be able to handle very well on Ultimate settings (gonna have it on an insane cooler constantly).

For the price of one 120GB SSD I can get a 500gb 7200RPM HDD AND get some change... so I was wondering if the SSD's would actually be worth it. I want to play games without stuttering, and have it switch on real fast (and As i understand SSD's are safer, without any spinning). Can you get RAID on HDD's as well as SSD's?

Thanks for your time,

The Marv Dog.

Well if it's solely going to be used for gaming, and it is indeed going to be a laptop you want... (Understandable that a tower isn't really 'portable' but I would suspect easier to secure down than a laptop.. But they again you need to secure a screen, keyboard, mouse, speakers.. Yeah.. Laptop sounds good now redface.gif)

There's no way you'll need 32GB of RAM, You've no real justification for 16GB either.
Drop that out the specs if you can, should give you a fairly nice saving.

Hard drive wise, you could nab a 500GB HDD and a 60GB SSD for a boot drive in place of a 120GB.
That and laptops / pre-builts are just going to charge you extortionately for HDD space anyway. Odds are you could probably buy a 500GB + 240GB SSD cheaper than they'd charge you for RAID'ing 2x 120GB SSDs xD

Although load speeds of games might be improved with an SSD (near instant loading screens) it won't really affect your ability to game, fps and such.
I'd recommend you install games to a conventional HDD and just keep 'a' SSD drive for the boot drive to keep your OS / Underlying programs still operating quickly and smoothly.

If you're an avid user of Steam, installing games to another HDD just got a whole lot easier. If you're using installers / Discs / Other digital games platforms, ensure to install the program to the HDD and not SSD.
E.g. I have R:\PC\Steam (all steam stuff, prior to newer update)
R:\PC\Xsplit
R:\PC\[Game name here]
and so forth.

Had a quick run through the customizer, I'd opt for something like this If I 'really really really' 'needed' a gaming laptop.

Customizations:
Chassis: Nomad 17 Performance Chassis with sound by DynAudio (Stereo sound with subwoofer) and backlit keyboard | Included
Exterior Finish: Standard Black | Included
Display: 17.3" FullHD 16:9 LED Display (1080p) matte screen | Included

Memory: 16GB Corsair® Vengeance™ DDR3-1600 1.5V (2x8GB, SODIMMs) | $117.00
Hard Drive Bay One: 120GB Corsair® Force GT SSD SATA 6G (w/ TRIM) [555MB/s Reads] | $69.00
Hard Drive Bay Two: 500GB Seagate 7200 RPM SATA 2.5" | $99.00
Memory Card Reader: All-in-One Integrated USB 2.0 Flash Card Reader & Writer | Included
Optical Drive One: 6x Blu-ray Reader/8x Super Multi Combo | $89.00

Angelic Service Warranty: Lifetime Angelic Service Labor and Phone Support with 1 Year Hardware Warranty | Included

Reconfigure MAINGEAR Nomad 17 [HM77]
Product Subtotal: $2,761.00

Dropping the above price into xe.com gives:
2,761.00 USD = 1,719.51 GBP
@
1.00 GBP = 1.60569 USD

Considering that's more than Hoshi has cost me over the last 2 years, is mostly the reason why I can never bring myself to spend so much on a laptop. x3

Hey thanks a lot for that; seems that saving money on RAM is a good idea biggrin.gif

I'll be getting what you put up there with a couple of small modifications, thanks!

One more thing; At the bottom it tells me if I want to tell them any special instructions. What can I tell them about the SSD so that it would boot off it? As I understand it will start-up and shut down much faster. I'll do as you suggested and have the OS and all necessary programs on there; I think that I can deal with the slightly slower game load times.

I'd assume they'd install the OS to "Hard Drive Bay One", but it can't hurt to note that if you would like to make sure.

It seems unlikely they'd install the OS to the HDD given you want/customized a build to include an SSD.
It only seems logical for them to install the OS (and all their bloatware) to the SSD. xD

Also as a quick note on the OS, Windows 7 Home Prem x64 only supports up to 16GB RAM, if you do decide to go 32GB (for whatever reason) you'll need to upgrade your OS too. I'd (personally) uninstall / install my own OS.

Cheers. Now just to decide if I should take Windows 7 or Windows 8 rolleyes.gif

I'll be going with 0 dead pixel guarantee and 3 years warranty. I've heard that Gaming laptops usually fail within 3 years and also I would hate to have 4 dead pixels and not be able to do anything about it, as 5+ is the return mark.

On point, a mechanical hard drive can be damaged by movement. It normally takes sudden shocks, but on a moving ship and SSD with no moving parts isn't going to be affected by the constant motion, where a mech drive might be. Fairly small chance, but one worth considering. If you need more storage, you could get an external hard drive. You can also hide these easily as well..

Talking about that, my first trip to sea involved having my Dell Inspiron 15R (this beast that I'm using currently) flying WHILE ON at the door about 2 metres away, doing a backflip and landing on the screen. This laptop is very rugged considering that it well, isn't supposed to be lol. Anyway, withstanding flying around my cabin, rolling side-to-side and being hit by falling debris in my cabin (sometimes while left on) should apparently have taken more of a toll on the laptop than it has done, as the HDD is still working perfectly well, much to the surprise of myself and anyone else that I tell.

Anyway, I do think that the SSD is the best Idea when i'm onboard ship... but I can't afford to have like a Terabyte SSD so I don't see what else I can do. I'm getting a 500gb HDD & a 250gb SSD which will be partitioned 60-100gb for the OS and attached bizwang (I'm thinking Windows 8 but we'll see), leaving only 150-190GB. That is certainly not enough to have anything other than Documents and my important Taylor Swift collection on it so I guess that the safe option is to back everything up onto my External 1TB every couple of days and delete old copies, leaving the external hidden away from corrupt port authorities, falling cups and the perils of the Bay of Biscay. Oh and I'll have to be sure to close my cabin window. Wheat, Cocoa and the like flying around the cabin definitely won't do my gear any good. And I won't go into the 2nd officer having Titanium Dioxide spread out all over his lovely laptop. Hey, maybe I'll get some nice intake fan sized chocolate coming out the laptop rolleyes.gif
