[Eurogamer] Microsoft has sold 70 million Xbox 360s - Page 6

People are still arguing about console sales and who won the console war???

I thought they had grown up (literally) during the lifespan of the current gen consoles...
My 360 broke in Febuary of this year, after about 4 or 5 years. I searched the internet on how to repair RRoD and ended up opening it up. Replaced the x-clamps with regular screws on washers and reapplied thermal paste, has been running fine since. thumb.gif I really didn' t want to buy another one with next generation of consoles coming out the the next year or two.

ALL Xbox360's will eventually fail, Microsoft needs to own up to this, I am on my 3rd one (borrowed mind you I cant even afford a new one).
I can not express my rage with Microsoft over this flaw. They use non leaded solder and it is not used at the correct temperature and the solder is not the correct composition for this application. mad.gif
Microsoft will not fix my last Xbox because it was right outside of warranty for an issue THEY are aware of and directly caused and built into the system.
BGA re-ball with lead solder will fix the issue permanently but they will not pay for it or do it.
  1. The solder is not the correct composition.
  2. The solder is not applied and soldered at the correct temperatures.
  3. The solder can not LAST at the operating temperatures of the silicone chips inside of the Xbox 360.
  4. Microsoft should own up and fix all the RROD Xbox360s.

Sony, Microsoft, Nvidia, AMD, and others were all using lead free solder at the time. Just look at all the broken 8800gt's.
MS gave its users 3 years which is more then any other company was willing to do. I was smart enough to apply my own thermal paste the second time we got our xbox back as the warranty was now up. Though the Jasper 360's and up are pretty much fixed when it comes to design flaw, my jasper is quiet and stays pretty cool when playing games, and because I play games from the hard drive the console makes less noise gaming then my ps3 idling at the dash. And I have personally replaced the TIM and cleaned the internals of both consoles so I know that will never be a problem.

The 2005-2008 era was pretty bad in GPU solder flaws for many laptop graphic cards and consoles so this wasnt just a MS problem but a industry problem. Look at all the HP DVXXX laptops with the Nvidia 7 series chipset that have gone though the same problem.

I've had to send back my 360 twice, I got it in '06, but both replacements were done within the 3 year warranty Microsoft gave. Haven't had to replace my PS3 yet (bought in '07), but I bought my 360 knowing what I was getting with the hardware failure (both are currently getting noticeable louder while playing games now). That being said, good on Sony to get hardware sales up like that, both systems have good and bad about them.

I'm not sure if it's even legal to sell something containing lead based solder anymore lol. They certainly are not going to do that.

Still does not excuse the issue though, and how poor they have been at fixing it.

And people are still arguing over which GPU is faster to run games that are "console ports".

As Lordikon pointed out, most, if not a great plurality, of console users are adults

That's your opinion...

Xbox has more games that are on PC AND more games that aren't on PC. Not only that, but it has the overall higher rated library according to Metacritic..

Sorry about the DP...Totally wasn't thinking

Never had a single 360 fail, out of the four I've owned. My 60GB PS3 needs a kick in the rear every now and then due to YLOD, but other than that it's fine.

I found that the PS2 and Dreamcast were much more unreliable than this generation. Can't tell you how many PS2 DVD drives burnt out on me...

I'm still shocked at the length of this generation.....it's almost 2013 and there are only rumors about the next xbox/ps3.
