Motherboard Smoking

Thread Starter
I've read around but I can't find a proper solution to my problem. This is what happened:

My computer used to be working fine. I resleeved the PSU and did some cable management, as well as reapplied thermal paste. After reassembling the computer, I actually had some memory problems. The DRAM led was lighted up and I tried switching ram slots/removing rams. After that it was fine.

I just reassembled my computer last night and I was using it for over 5 hours. No problem at all and shut down fine. This morning I woke up, started up the computer and after using it for 1+ hour I heard some noises and I saw smoke coming from the motherboard, the computer was still working fine at this point (didn't shut down or hang) but I quickly turned the whole thing off and unplugged everything.

I'm pretty sure I didn't mess up the order of my PSU cables... Don't know what I should do next. Is it most likely to be a motherboard problem? I'm using a Asus P6x58d-e and the smoke came near the motherboard's power button (the one under the PCI slots).

Did you drop any thermal paste on the motherboard?

Have you reassambled the pc fine? so that means that everything is plugged in correctly, standoffs, etc.

I would take it apart again (totally) and with some more advice here, put it back together, double checking EVERYTHING.

good luck!thumb.gif

I just removed everything and found that the graphic card slot is burnt frown.gif Took away a bit of the pins of my graphic card as well.... hopefully I don't have to change it. All the connections seems fine and I'm starting to doubt myself whether I resleeved the PSU properly.... Or did the motherboard just happen to break down coincidentially? Now I'm thinking of whether I can RMA the motherboard or whether just buying a new motherboard and/or graphics card will solve the problem.

IF I did make a mistake resleeving..... my computer won't have been able to run for 5-6 hours last night will it?

Really don't know what to do now. Want to get it fixed asap but I don't really think the local computer shops are of much help either.

Would getting a new mobo and graphic card solve it? frown.gif

Hmm..what psu is it? ..did you get all the connectors to the 6-pin pcie done right?I'd re-check um if I was you.
It looks like card tried to suck too much power from pcie slot cuz it wasn't getting enough elsewhere.I'd check the 6-pin plugs and use the other pcie slot/rma the board maybe.

It's a XFX Black Edition 750w. I'm thinking of getting a power supply tester now to make sure everything is alright. But I really want to get it fixed asap. Getting a tester first, then testing the psu and doing RMA for the motherboard, probably getting a new graphic card.... all seems to be time-consuming.

I tried switching the graphics to another slot but fire comes out from the burnt slot..... seems like motherboard is definitely gone for now frown.gif

Yeah you really must've messed something up, 99% of the time motherboards don't just start on fire for no reason.

Any ideas on what else I can do other than waiting for the PSU tester? I still think if I messed up the PSU it wouldn't run for 5-6 hours yesterday...

Well it looks to me the graphics card is badly damaged so try to get that replaced. The mobo definitely has to go as well.

There's really nothing else to do until you test the PSU and replace the MOBO and Graphics.
