Not sure which AM3 CPU i should buy

Thread Starter
Hi,

I recently was given an AM3 Mobo, Ram, and a gpu so i tought of buying an AM3 cpu to have a spare rig or just sell it to a friend. I haven't had an AMD processor since my Sempron 3200+ so i'm a little out of the loop. Here is a list of available am3 processors Here. I'm thinking of going 955, from what i read on the forum it seems to be a nice processor with good overclocking capabilities.

Specs i'm thinking would be as followed

Mobo: ASUS M4A77TD
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955BE
RAM: G.skill 2x4GB DDR3 1600mhz
GPU:Radeon HD 5870
HDD: 750GB WD BLACK
PSU XFX 550W
Case: not sure yet

IF you have any suggestions please tell me

Cheers

P.S. This will be a budget gaming rig with my spare parts except for the Processor

I would suggest a 955,in my system specs you can see how much I have it o/ced and it is stable.Or you can get a 965 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103727&name=Processors-Desktops.

But I would also suggest buying a good cooling device, whether it be an air cooling or a water cooling.I am going with the later soon.

I would suggest this for a case:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811139013

and this for cooling:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811139013

That would definitely bring your o/c up.

any of the last revision denebs are good (C3?) tho if you can get your hands a thuban X6 or a zosman x4 (unlock to X6), then i recon that's a better chip to go for.

any quad. if you find a 960t or 'the other' locked thuban, it would be best and leave it locked.
asus says its a 140watt board but you dont want a pull too much through the vrm's and have them throttle the cpu when they over heat

i have the 1090t and fx8120, i stuck with my fx8120 for everyday use it plays games for me just the same as my 1090t does but i also upgraded gpu and it overclocked to 4.4gz which i could only get to 4ghz on my 1090t

so there are differences but i would say wait till october 23rd and get the pildriver chip, or pick up an fx8120

in the future these 8core chips will do better when more games and apps actually need to use all 8 cores. the only game i really have that likes my 8120 alot in bf3

microcenter has the 8120 for 139.99 which is a good deal.

keep in mind you will need after market cooling
