Thread Starter
Hello everyone,

Reason for this post is that I am looking for some insight on where to start on programming and what language is most beneficial.

I don't have a clue how to do scripting either and that always bothered me, I wa:thumb:nt to teach myself how to program... just need some help on where to start.

Thank You!

Depends on if this is just a hobby or to make a living. I would say the best language to start learning is either Python or Java. Python as a hobby or Java if you want to make a living doing programming (not that you can't with python, just way more Java jobs).

You are correct about Java being in much more of a demand. I don't want to do this as a hobby, but for now that is what it will fall under until I learn more. Scripting would be more of a hobby thing, it feels like everyone knows how to do that but me...

I have a list of free ebooks at home, I'll post a few links later. While scripting is commonly known, it is in high demand for IT professionals. You'd be amazed how little of my education I actually use at my job. 75% of my work is writing batch files for silent deployments.

I would recommend PHP+HTML. Because you don't need to deal with compiling things, installing dependencies, all you need to do is install xampp and code away, you can get pretty results because you would use HTML, which is very easy, to generate the interface of your creations and PHP for the code.

Java should never be used as a starter programming language because it involves many aspects and unless you only want to learn some syntax, stay out of it.
My opinion is that somebody should only jump into java after understand and learning what is OO (object oriented) and it's concepts.

Classically C is the most used one to begin with, but the bad part of it is that you would only make console applications in your early days. It's also a lot like java: to really understand C you would have to learn a lot about CPU architectures, memory management and even OS kernels.

For both java and C, it doesn't mean you can't program with it if you don't completely understand them. This was my case, I started with C, but things only got clear when I got deep into the things I mentioned.

As for java I first learned some pseudo-code just to learn some syntax, then we moved to OO and finally java. I can't say there is a better way than this.

It really depends on what you want to program.

Websites/Ecommerce etc - HTML/CSS/Javascript and one of PHP or Java
Mobile apps - Objective C for iPhone, Java for Android
desktop apps - c++, c# and lots of others
Games - Probably C++

It is very dependent on what you want to do and the best thing you can learn up front is to choose the best language for what you are trying to do. Sometimes you are limited (as in iPhone apps) but most of the time you are not and choosing the appropriate language can make your life a lot easier.

You need to learn the basic programming principals and this can be done in any well formed language. Java is a common teaching language and is not a bad one to start with. C/C++ also work well. Once you get the basics down it applies to almost all languages.

I'm starting Computer Systems Engineering and they're having us start on Java until we move into C++ and Assembly language. My book is called Java for Everyone by Cay Horstmanm and its the second edition. It's a pretty good book and I think it explains things very well

Did you check out the Programming Master Sticky? Lots of good info in one place, FAQ including a question on where to start, etc. Best way to go is to start a tutorial on a good language, get a feel for things, and then just go make something. C++ is good because it opens a lot of doors, and other languages become easy by comparison. If it's too daunting, Java is a great start, because the language is very simple, and it's highly managed, so you don't have to deal with a lot of details like memory management - it does it for you.
