I am going to go with Java to start!

Can someone suggest a good book for beginner Java?

I would recommend starting with .NET (preferably C#) because you can desktop apps, web apps, and even games for Windows + Xbox.

If you have NEVER programmed, start with something really easy like BATCH, and learn that in like 3 hours (or less thumb.gif). After you see how the computer understands commands and variables you can go to Java, or C++, depending on what you want to do.
