New budget box, how much better will it be?

I am building a new rig that is almost the same, but with these changes:

Pentium 4 531 3.0GHz, 800MHz FSB, 1Mb L2 Cache
1Gb DDR2 533

as opposed to my P4 515J 2.93GHz, 533MHz FSB, 1Mb L2 Cache and DDR2 400 RAM. Graphics card will then be upgraded from an original PCI to AGP later. Then, possibly a PhysX card, but for now it will just be the CPU and RAM. TOTAL it will cost around $400 or less for this DECENT rig. The reason I am not upgrading my old one is because that one is going to the daycare my sister runs after formatting the HDD of course.

Personally i would not do such an upgrade. It is like wasting money. You already have a p4. I would just save and build a newer system otherwise you will be itching to upgrade again after that.

Ya you should wait and save up $500- $600 or so, and if you don't then at least look into getting an AMD on the 939 socket and board you can get those fairly cheap now a days and for slightly more cost you could come away with much better performance.

I need the PC by January and I still need to buy christmas presents. My budget is $400. I also, really want to buy my sister a laptop, which will cost me about $500, and I don't make a lot of money. I figured in the price, and I will get every part except RAM, which I already have plenty of. So this isn't a bad price. Since my old one won't need great graphics, I can use my old card. Also, I can use the RAM I took out of my old system, put it back in, and use the RAM I upgraded to for my new one, which is DDR2 533. Also, my DDR2 won't work with a 939 board, sadly.

Still, no one has answered my question, how much performance will it be?

Performance increase from 2.93 to 3.0ghz would be almost imperceptible, no way is it worth the money.

A better option would be:
Celeron D 356 $65
ASUS P5LD2 $110
G.Skill Extreme 1g $97

The Celeron D 356 will hit 5.0ghz easy with that board

This is overlooking the fact that it is also going from a 533 FSB to 800FSB. While the performance increase would not be a neck snapping jump, there would be a noticeable increase in some applications in jumping 67FSB. While it is true 2.93 and 3 are almost the same clock speed, the higher FSB will yield a performance gain.

Now, you say your budget is $400 but you don't need to buy RAM, but you're stuck using an AGP card?

EDIT: Did some checking, looks like your current board has only PCI slots (and I notice you said you were going from a PCI to an AGP in the future???) The Celeron build listed above could be a good choice, although I doubt you will see 5Ghz from the P5LD2, and it depends on what you need the system for. I would recommend the Gigabyte S3 over the P5LD2. I love ASUS, but the S3 is almost the same price and has the 965 chipset, which is much better than the 945. You may even be able to get the newer revision which supports Kentsfields and have some major future proofing to make it last several years for you.

there stil wont be much of an increase, if you want results get a dual core get a cheap c2d, that will roll up your current proc and smoke it i waisted my money on a pentium d 950, should have gotten the core 2 duo
