Windows 8 is extremely confusing, any help?

Out of curiosity, I installed Windows 8 Pro on my Thinkpad X200 tablet, but so far I've found myself extremely confused by the new UI. Things that were very simple to do in Windows 7 now seem much more convoluted. For example, I tried to install Chrome right after I installed Windows 8, but it turns out I have to enable the Administrator account through command prompt before I have the privileges to install stuff like Chrome.


For those of you who came from older versions of Windows, what tips would you give to make Windows 8 a little more bearable? I'm going to stick with Win 8 for a few more days, and if I feel like I'm not "getting it" by then, I'll just go back and re-install Windows 7.

I should clarify. I got a message about Chrome and administrator privileges when I tried installing. I'm aware that you can install Chrome without admin privileges, but having go through command prompt just to enable the admin account...? I don't see the point behind making the process so convoluted.

Why are you trying to do this? The administrator account has been disabled by default since Windows Vista.

Local admin has been hidden since Vista. If you really want it of course you're going to have to jump through a few hoops - its the first thing I do whenever I install a modern windows OS on one of my rigs so I can run directly out of the local admin in windows vista and 7. I don't see why it should be any different in 8.

Anyway its easier to just turn UAC off...

I figured out how to do it in command prompt, so now I don't have to deal with all of those pesky pop-ups anymore about privileges.

I think I'm going to have to get Start8 since I don't find the standard Metro interface user-friendly at all. It seems like a tablet OS poorly adapted for use on real computers.

Anyone try Start8 and find it helpful with making Win8 a little easier to use? Though I think having to pay extra for a third-party app just to get back the start menu is a bit wrong on principle...

After trying out Win 8 for a little bit, I'm so glad I installed it on my Tablet PC first, since most of my programs and data are on my desktop. If I decide to go back to Win7 on my X200t in the next few days, at least there's not much to reinstall smile.gif

Let me propose you this: Use Windows 8 as it is intended and see if you like it. Don't be so quick to jump into apps like Start8.

I've used it for a few hours now and hate the standard interface. If I found it bearable, do you think I'd be on a forum asking about apps like Start8?
