I don't see why it should be any different in 8.

I figured out how to do it in command prompt, so now I don't have to deal with all of those pesky pop-ups anymore about privileges.

I think I'm going to have to get Start8 since I don't find the standard Metro interface user-friendly at all. It seems like a tablet OS poorly adapted for use on real computers.

Anyone try Start8 and find it helpful with making Win8 a little easier to use? Though I think having to pay extra for a third-party app just to get back the start menu is a bit wrong on principle...

After trying out Win 8 for a little bit, I'm so glad I installed it on my Tablet PC first, since most of my programs and data are on my desktop. If I decide to go back to Win7 on my X200t in the next few days, at least there's not much to reinstall smile.gif

Classic Shell is free.

Thanks, looking into it now.

You're welcome! From what I know it allows you to bypass the Start screen and go straight to the desktop on boot-up and gives you a configurable Start menu.

Start8 makes Windows 8 bearable for me. It's an operating system, not a smoking addiction, I shouldn't have to quit using something as integral as the classic start menu because Microsoft wants me to.

+1

Classic Shell is making Windows 8 a lot more bearable for me so far. IMO, if a new OS still confuses the crap out of me after a few hours, that OS gets a 1/10 for user friendliness.

I've been a Windows guy since before Windows 95, and even when I use a Mac it doesn't take more than a few minutes to get acquainted. Windows 8 is the first OS that has actually caused me to stare blankly at the Metro screen and facepalm.

I found it weird the first few hours, it was really weird for me at first, of course add to the fact that the lovable start button wasn't there anymore frown.gif . Then again, I installed Windows Server 2012 and had to follow a guide to make it work like a workstation which really got me acquainted with some knowledge about how to work on the OS. After some time, I'm liking more how this OS works, may be because it's kinda like a new toy.

Still I haven't had any problem overall with the installs of any software of any kind. So it's kinda weird you did but glad you managed to solve it. I know it looks like it's mainly for tablets, but you should still give it a try, it isn't as bad as people make it look like it is.

Out of curiosity I went to Wikipedia to read what is said about the Start Menu, and I found these paragraphs very interesting:
Quote:
In the earliest versions of Windows a program called MS-DOS Executive provided basic file management and program menu capability. This was eventually replaced by the programs File Manager and Program Manager in Windows 3.0, with the Program Manager taking on the role of the program menu.

The Program Manager was a full windowed application, which required the whole screen to be used effectively. It consisted of a simple multiple document interface which allowed users to open "program groups" and then execute the shortcuts to programs contained within.

The Start menu was first introduced in Windows 95 superseding the Program Manager, being comparable in some respects with the Apple Macintosh "Apple Menu". It also boasted several advantages over the Program Manager. Program Manager had lacked the ability to nest groups within other groups, however there was no such limitation with the Start menu, where Start menu folders could contain sub-folders. Items could also be simply added to the Start menu by using drag-and-drop to drop program files, document files onto the Start Button.

After all I've written about how Windows 8's once called Metro UI just doesn't work properly on a desktop computer with a keyboard and mouse interface, the comparisons between the Start Menu and the previous Program Manager are very akin to the comparisons you can make nowadays between the Start Menu and the Start Screen. The Start Screen manages to have exactly the same kind of less functionality that you can read about the Program Manager. Ironic that Microsoft, trying to invent the future, just ended up going backwards almost twenty years on the desktop. Even the basic color tiles are a better fit for the early nineties.

Anyway its easier to just turn UAC off...

JK, I just prefer to bike.

As for UAC, yeah turning it off in windows 7 helps a lot. Doesn't do much in vista though.

Either way though, windows still throws barriers up in my face whenever I want to do something.

If I wanted a mac, I could have gotten one free from college. Since I obviously didn't choose that route, using the local admin as my main account just makes my computing life that much more pleasant.
